Best Type of Grain?

whats the best type of grain to use?
I want to get wbs cause its cheap and available but which type of wbs grains is it again?
what are good available brands of wild bird seed if nobody has any answer to the above
Also, to make a quart jar of spawn, what order do the lids go on?
is it:
Jar > lid with holes > tyvek > mason jar band ?
or
Jar > tyvek > lid with holes > mason jar band?
because i believe in the past that one of the main reasons for contamination was because "tyvek got wet and wicked contams through"
is this possible?
Thanks the ones working with me

i bought 20lb wbs and 5lb cracked corn. imho wbs is the worst. the cc are insanely better. doesnt need 24hr soak either. nicer cakes too. even better than popcorn.

I have no experience with grain so cant offer advice, everyone has there own opinions though.
As for the jar lids.
Jar, disc with holes, tyvek, ring. Keep the tyvek on the outside, you dont want it to get moist.
Some use it under without problems others dont. You can mark where your inoc holes are with a pen before sterilising so you know where they are

Cakes? Please, describe your technique further...
I assume you have read up on popular opinions of corn and why many believe it only appears to be better when it is in fact far inferior?

Are you serious? You asked this yesterday: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10074988#10074988
The answer hasn't changed. As much as possible, you don't want the jar contents to touch the filter, because when you shake the jar, the filter could get wet. A wet filter is not very useful because contams can wick right through it.

I am serious,
since when I ask and seek i get contradictory information i may as well ask again so i have a 2nd or even 3rd opinion on the matter again. I don't want to be given false information that will make my batches contamn.
the wild bird seed tek (i think) is the one where it says that the tyvek goes on first.

If you're serious about knowing then you should try various methods yourself and take great notes and report on your findings here.
Read a ton on the forum and read the archives intensively and read the posts of TCs and you will quickly grow a BS detector for bad information.

WBS rocks, its cheap and nutritionally diverse because it carries so many different types of grain. A great type of WBS to use is BirdBasics from petsmart or petco, Agar recommended this type to me and i've been using it ever since. Its 10.99 for 40lbs where i live, cant really beat that.
And i do, jar / tyvek / lid with holes / ring / aluminum foil
hope this helps, peace.

Organic Rye Berries is my grain of choice. I've used WBS and I have to say that Rye tops it in my book

I cant even tell you how bad I want to get good at birdseed.Tek after tek and no matter what sometimes they are perfect and sometimes horrible and I can never figure out why(90% of the times Ive tried it was bird basics so its not the brand)I don't know whats up but yea.. It may be a bit pricier but with a half the time failure rate like I get with it it probably comes out to the same price as just getting rye to start with.I'm a rye guy all the way

Ive tried your tek more than once FooMan,same as the rest, half the time perfect and the other half complete failure even though I did everything I can think of the same, drives me crazy I remember the 1st few times it worked great for me and I think it was one of the 1st birdseed teks I did get any good results from. Its not like birdseed sucks. When it does work it works great its just that I cant get consistent results with it for some reason

Moisture contact most of the time, nearly always as a matter of fact.I mean if its a contamination I blame myself but I do everything in still air so thats not usually it.

Do you use a metal strainer? They seem to drain better than the plastic.

If I remember correctly I have used both but its been a long long time since I tried it so I'm not sure,I think they fall through the holes in my plastic colanders so I used a strainer
