Hey everyone, first off, the prints up for grabs are all Creepers. I have 3 that I am giving away to the 3 people who reply with the most interesting factoids regarding mushrooms. Get creative, get a print. Simple!

how is this
The spores of mushrooms are made of chitin, the hardest naturally-made substance on Earth. Some scientists suspect that mushroom spores are capable of space travel; a few even believe that some fungi found on Earth originally came from outer space!
-------------------- So what if I don't have a lot of post, I use the magical "search"!

Drug taking allegations were common in the ancient Olympics just like with the modern ones and one of the most commonly used performance enhancers was the Fly Agaric, Amanita muscaria. It is even rumoured that Pythagoras of the triangle fame took it when he won his boxing gold to give him a crazy hallucinogenic boost.

Mushrooms taste like chicken, because they are in fact, chicken.

The Vegetable Caterpillar, Cordyceps sp., reproduces by its spores germinating in the body of a caterpillar, which is then completely replaced by the growing fungus.

Amanita muscaria bears a resembelance to all things xmas related...why are your stockings red and white, why hung by the chimmney?...to dry possibly? Santa was a shamen who brought a sack of goodies to good folks. Siberia has the most dense population of reindeer in the world, and the snow drifts get so high, people build entrances to the fron their roofs (chimmneys), does it add up yet?

Fusarium species cause head scab of grains. In doing so, Fusarium species produce a mycotoxin known as vomitoxin or deoxynivalenol (DON) that is excreted into the grains. When these grains are used in making beer, the DON acts as a nucleation site for bubbles. So beer made with grains containing DON is far more bubbly than beer made with grains not containing DON. If you've ever had a keg of beer or can of beer spurt and bubble wildly when opened, it is likely that DON and, ultimately, Fusarium species are the culprit.

Ah, yes, and these are considered quite the delicacy in Japan. They are very tasty and, reportedly, very healthy as well.

Ooohh ohhh!
The phrase "toad stool" is actually Scandinavian (not sure which dialect) for "Death's seat." The term comes from the agaric's which grew in the region and were poisonous. It has nothing to do with amphibians.
Here is another: In tough times, members of the Russian lower class would eat mushrooms instead of alchohol because it was cheaper and the shrooms grew in the field.

Actually the term "toadstool" is of German origin.

Mushrooms are believed to be the first living thing on earth and were one of few surface species to survive the asteroid impact that killed dinosaurs (the earth was one big TiT while the dust settled). They survived off the radiation of the sun...

??? Mushrooms came before single-celled organisms and blue-green algae? Aren't most species that are on the earths surface today one of the few that "survived the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs?"

Fully mature fruit bodys will contain roughly the same number of cells as it did when it was a pin.
The reason being, is that a mushroom rapidly grows in size by expanding its cells with moisture like a balloon fills with air, growing many many times its original size. Moisture is pumped by capilary action through the mycelial network.
Mushroom fruitbodys have no protective skin, and therefore will exchange gases directly with the surrounding atmosphere. Thats why you need to keep RH high, other wise fruitbodies will loose moisture faster than can be pumped to it by capilary action.

"Certain fungi, in particular 'white rot' fungi, can degrade insecticides, herbicides, pentachlorophenol, creosote, coal tars, and heavy fuels and turn them into carbon dioxide, water, and basic elements. Fungi have been shown to biomineralize uranium oxides, suggesting they may have application in the bioremediation of radioactively polluted sites."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fungus#Bioremediation
It may not seem like the most interesting factoid, at a glance, but this is a very important area of mycology (mycoremediation). In my opinion, bioremediation of radioactive pollution is one of the most important ways humans have ever attempted put fungi to use.

Mushrooms are low in calories, have no cholesterol and are virtually free of fat and sodium. Mushrooms also contain other essential minerals like Selenium, which works with Vitamin E to produce antioxidants that neutralize "free radicals" which can cause cell damage. Studies have suggested that selenium may reduce the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, may slow the progress of HIV disease and may aid in symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, pancreatitis and asthma. Studies show men who eat selenium rich foods may lower their risk of prostate cancer. Potassium (good for the heart) is also found in mushrooms. It has been suggested a diet with potassium may help to reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Copper is another essential mineral found in mushrooms. Copper aids iron (also found in mushrooms) in making red blood cells and delivers oxygen to the body. Mushrooms also contain three B-complex vitamins; riboflavin for healthy skin and vision, niacin aids the digestive and nervous systems, and pantothenic acid helps with the nervous system and hormone production. These vitamins are found in every cell and help to release energy from fat, protein and carbohydrates in food. Vegetarians should know that mushrooms are one of the best sources of niacin. The vitamin content of mushrooms is actually similar to the vitamin content found in meat. The amino acid count in mushrooms is higher per serving than corn, peanuts, kidney and soy beans. The average mushroom is also high in protein and nucleic acid.
