    #10074382 - 03/30/09 02:54 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

hello all. yeah another thread about yeilds sorry but yeah here we go..

I read around .. like crazy. but how about some people chime in if u use those tubs what did u use for sub? spawn? how much spawn and sub... I'm curious to see an average and if u are a brf cake crumbler please add ur experiences since that's the method I've been using.. just wanna make sure I'm not way off.

I am pasturizing cob and coffee right now that ill be spawning to in one of those tubs later tonight... ill update as it goes

thanks for everyones participation in  advance

I agree totally. However, this forum isn't for the experienced growers, because they already know the ropes.  It's for the new growers who are just starting out.  Sometimes the hardest part about learning something new is un-learning bad info.  That's why I tend to correct people for calling a substrate tray a 'casing', etc.

I end up using close to one cup of  colonized grain to four-five qts of bulk material per 6qt tray. I usually end up getting about 32-40 dry grams per tray. (edit: on the first flush, usually get another 20-30 from later flushes)

I fill them up about one inch from the top. I mix them up six at a time. One PC run = 6 Jars = 6 Trays = 2 full FC tubs. 2 PC runs fill up my FC Space. 4 Large Oven Bags hold enough bulk for 12 trays for pasteurization (I don't cram it in there).

good stuff... how long do they take to fully colonize being that deep?

Depends. Usually seven to ten days until they hit the fc. I leave them in the trays until i see knotting then I take them out. My setup favors side and under pinning.

Yeah I just recently starting using these 6 quart tubs and they are fucking awesome.

I have 40 of them now, hoping to get about 20 more.

What I'll do is drop in 2 quarts of WBS(which is really 1.5), mixed with around 3 quarts of coir 65/verm 20/coffee 10/gypsum 5 bulk mixture.

Then, I just pop the lid on, label the tub and set it on the shelf.  10-12 days later the tub is perfect to introduce to fruiting conditions.

Whats awesome about this is that you can inspect all 6 sides of the block for contamination and to watch colonization without opening the lid.

I'll then plop the substrate block from out of the tub, onto the lid upside down.  And slide that into greenhouse, exposing all 5 sides.

After I harvest the first flush.  I'll easily inspect in the bottom of the block, and pick any bottom pinning if there is.  Once it is picked I'll put the block back in the tub, fill it up with water, and then push the block down gently to help wash the surface.

I cut a bunch of "rings" from a PVC pipe.  I put a couple rings on top of the block, and then put that lid back on the tub to push the block underwater.  Then just set it on a shelf for 6 or so hours.  After the soak, I dump the water out of the tub, pour a bit more in, push it down slightly to wash it again, dump the water, and then put the block right back into fruiting conditions.

They're so easy to work with its awesome.

Shroomzey, that's really cool. I'll have to try doing sawdust blocks in a few of those tubs.

I wish I had a working camera right now so I could show how modular and easy the rotation is... I first started using this 16 x 16 seeding trays for the greenhouses I built, which at first seemed like the optimal tray, but ended up being a hassle.

These are older pics... I took these when I first tried them out.  Right now I have 23 of these blocks in the greenhouse with 16 tubs colonizing on my shelves with my jars:

They stack easy, and you can stack as many as you want.. the lids have little plastic spacers which allow air flow through them.

These are the first MS results:
(Keep in mind this block is only like 3 quarts total, with 1 quart of WBS in it, the current blocks I'm fruiting and colonizing are fat and almost fill up the whole tub.

I'm fruiting a clone right now, and an isolate is colonizing.  Compared to the 16 x 16 trays, I could fruit up to 18 total quarts per shelf ( times 5 shelves per 2 greenhouses total capacity of 180 quarts.)

Now I can fruit about 25 quarts per shelf, for a total capacity or 250 quarts for my greenhouses.

Easier to set up, easy to inspect(during colonization AND fruiting), easy to introduce or rotate because their small.  Easy to dunk.  Easy to clean up.  Easy easy easy.

Nope, there are little spaces under the lid so that the seal is not complete.  When I first tried these I figured that just putting the lids on would be enough for GE due to the lids being an imperfect seal, like same that I would do with mono's.  And was worried about stacking them on top of each other, thinking it would press down on the lids and seal them.  But they don't, the spacers provide enough for GE.

I picked each tub up from Big Lots for a buck each, btw.
