unidentified mushroom on my cake
#10074263 - 03/30/09 02:35 PM (15 years, 9 months ago) |

I went in to mist this morning and found a mushroom growing on a cake that isnt a psilocybe.

I know the pics suck but it has a pink tint to it and has pretty well developed gills on the underside. It's also growing downward. The cake was inoculated with India Orisso. Just curious if these are bad or if the cake can be carved up to try and see if something else might still grow.

I got them from hawkseye. Shit, I still have one more cake in the fc that was inoculated with these and 2 rye jars that are ready to go. If I end up with a bunch of oysters thats going to drive me crazy. What are the chances that some random oyster spores settled on my cake and grew? Are they native to the pnw?

I've had some "mutant" cubies grow before. Not all mushrooms are perfect specimens, some of them just look really fucked-up for some reason. Case in point:

Yours do look a bit weirder though, I'd wait for some more opinions.

They do have a very oyster quality to them, but I haven't grown any that looked quite like that.
Perhaps you should have posted it in the mushroom hunting section and asked for an ID? Might be better to let them grow out a little too (assuming you're not worried about them) so you can see how they form more clearly.

What are the chances that these can contaminate the cakes in the fc. Does anyone know if oyster myc grows the same as cubes? Because the myc in all of these grew the same as my cubes.

Almost all mushroom myc looks the same unless you've seen it MANY times. So you could very well have oyster myc in there.
Also, if it is just oysters, you won't have contams. Since it looks like mushroom fruit bodies, I would say there is a good chance it is not a contaminate at all (unless like speculated some other mushroom spores got in during inoculation)

Oyster mushrooms are native to the PNW, and my best oyster culture came from the cascades.
However, those don't really look like oysters either, even though they seem to be that shape. Oysters usually pin in clusters and then flatten out later. I don't know wtf they are, but they're not cubes unless they're some weird mutant shape I've never seen. I wouldn't eat them. RR

To the OP, I guess that means it's time for you to step up to the level of Pro Mycologist and actually put some spores under the microscope! Maybe then you can get some more information. (I know, I know, we're all already spending all day looking at spores under the microscope... )

It's really strange, because I have just been on the Hawkseye website and they don't seem to sell edible mushroom spores, and they don't sell anything that looks like that. You didn't mix them up yourself did you? Whatever they are, it is probably wise not to eat them if you can't properly identify them.

So am i to understand that the spores to these were just floating around and got lucky enough to land on his cakes, and beat out his cubies? Thats terrible, waiting 2+ weeks for some mushroom that will grow in your kids mouth!

I wonder could his spores have come from a wild sample that was contaminated with spores from these? I'd say it is unlikely that they just landed on his cakes. I think it is more likely that they were contaminated before inoculation. It will be interesting to see what the other cakes will turn out like.

I bought them as syringes. I don't have a high level of experience but these are about 5th or 6th round of cakes, and I've never had a contaminate, (though I've had a few that just never took), which is why this is weird to me. I would never eat something I didn't know for sure, but I just can't figure out how a cake can start with one kind of spores and grow something completely different. I need to get a microscope, it's the one thing I don't have and would like to. Maybe once they're done I can print them and send them to someone who knows more. I'll post more pics when they get a little bigger.

Trich = trichoderma it is green 'forest mold' that is VERY common in many places around the world. It likes to grow faster than out mushroom mycelium, basically killing it off.

If your getting into fungus, basically, you will see trich in the first 6 months. Very prolific. But when it shows up it's a good indicator that you need to refine you sterile skills. These unidentified shrooms are growing at a really fast rate now and I'm almost positive that they are the same as the pics that 5hroom showed on that thread link. Tomorrow morning I'll post pics. Weird thing is, the cakes that were in the FC with the contam are pinning like a mofo. Whatever it is, it just liked that cake and no others. Thanks for the help guys.
