Mushroom Hunting - JAPAN!
    #10072836 - 03/30/09 09:24 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Well, I've moved to Japan, and spring time is upon us... Time to go catch some mushies!

I live out in the country and have lots of big bamboo forests in my area (kyoto prefecture).

I've been doing a lot of :cool:research but still don't really know where to start.

Anyone had any experience in hunting in Japan?

I found a few threads and know the different species we have around here and stuff, but if anyone has any insider knowledge about shrooms in japan that would be wildly appreciated.

You guys can expect lots of photos and maybe some spore prints if I find some rare species!

I was sent some gill fragments of this species from Japan that I was able to cultivate outdoors.

Any active species found in Japan would be of interest to me.

Lots of interesting species in Japan, active and inactive.  When is the wet season there?  I'd assume it's similar to the pacific northwest climate wise.

I'm not too sure, but I bet landscaped areas with hardwood woodchips would be a start.

Good luck and post mad pics.

Some of us have been waiting for a Shroomerite to be an active poster from Japan for a while.

This is the mushroom of my interest:

It would be dope to find glow in the dark mushrooms, you would have to hunt at night though!

Heres some pictures i found on google

"The Mycena lux-coeli mushrooms, known locally as shii no tomobishi-dake (literally, “chinquapin glow mushrooms”), sprout from fallen chinquapin trees. "

A head's up: some of the members here aren't the only ones that want them.  As far as we know, no prints of these mushrooms have made it to the States.  Put the Shroomery on the map, send us those.

 and :goodluck:

There's also Agrocybe farinacea.

Here's a few pics of the Agrocybe.

I'd be interested in a print of these.

Well, i've been reading up on my area, and as luck would have it, it looks like there is a dairy farm pretty close to where I live, i might go check it out, seems like the right place to seek out some actives.
I just got an SLR camera and will be taking some pictures as soon as I find some goodies.
I found several mushrooms growing on dead trees on my last outing, but the my camera's battery was dead :frown:
Have to remember to fix that.

I just found this site:

http://kinoko-ya.sakura.ne.jp/01eng/0e_home.htm

This might be the place to go for all my info on the local fungus scene.

I'm going out today to see what i can find!

Panaeolus cinctulus may be found in cow manure but your chances are better looking in horse manure.

The rest of the known actives in Japan grow on wood and woodchips.

The mushrooms you are looking for will have the corresponding spore print colors.

Panaeolus = Black
Psilocybes/Agrocybe = Purple
Gymnopilus = Orange

Well, I spent about 7 hours out hunting with my three year old (he spent most of the day playing in the sand, throwing rocks into the river and such, even took a nice two hour nap next to the fire we built together.)
My search today, my first serious search ever was just to find fungus, not particularly actives.
After HOURS of finding nothing, I did manage to find a rotten log with dried up mushrooms of some kind and got some photos of that, but not a single fruiting body anywhere.
My search was on a flood plain island that's mostly bamboo forest and sand, although there are several huge trees and piles and piles of rotting branches and logs all around.
The forest floor is absolutely covered in green moss so I would expect to find some kind of fungal growth, but i haven't found anything yet... oh well. I'll keep trying!

I've been wondering, when's the best time to go looking? Morning? Evening? After rain? sunny days?  I'm really new to this.

Go back out after it rains.  Also try different habitats, I am not sure that much grows with bamboo.  Look in lawns, fields, forests with various different types of trees, etc.

For actives:

Look for old logs and landscaping wood chips. All the known actives grow on wood in Japan with the except of Panaeolus subbalteatus which grow in manure and fertilized lawns.

For edibles:

Hit those forests! It would be nice to see some wild japanese edibles. I'm sure plenty of people here would be interested in some hard to find cultures of rare edibles. Tricholoma matsutake comes to mind.

Japanese Red Pine would be a good tree to look for.

Well, it's been raining some serious cats and dogs all morning.  Now I have to convince my wife to help me find some horse ranches that aren't insanely far away!
Wish me luck!

Yeah, the problem is people don't really use woodchips in their gardening here, so i have to find whatever the natural alternative would be.

So what would the natural alternative to wood chips be?  I'm assuming it's dead rotting trees, fallen branches, and other such things.  Any help?

As for those glow in the dark mushrooms, i'm only two hours away from wakayama prefecture, where they are reported to grow, so i may make a few trips up there to see if i can find it.
