Touchy? Who's getting touchy? I'm just trying to get a point accross.

Regular silicone withstands the temperature of a pressure cooker JUST FINE.
go take a breath of fresh air and calm down.
the temp of a pressure cooker is higher than that of a car engine.
if we can all agree that any type of silicone will eventually fail after multiple uses, then we can probably agree that the better made silicone will last longer. hence my point.

yes, it will work just fine.
and cars made out of cheap parts drive just fine off the lot!
i just think it's wise to know the difference and realize your options.

I've made silicone ports and used the premade ones. Overall I prefer the premade ones simply because it's about the same price and less work. You can even pop them out and re-use them in other lids if the lid gets damaged or whatever.
The only real downside is you need to half a 1/2" hole which requires a drill. I bought a set of forstner bits off amazon which do the job wonderfully though.

Perfect for drill any size hole in jar lids, monotubs, and general 'round the house work.

i used a knife, a pair of plyers, and a file when i made my first set of jars years ago. it took me 20 minutes + for each jar.. lol..
needless to say i went and bough a drill bit the next day.

Nice thing is, an individual bit will cost you $5-15 depending on what size/type/brand/where, but that whole set, including a case and shipping is $30 :-D
drills perfect holes with no burrs, rough edges, etc.
I hate using regular circular bits for my monotubs because the plastic circles get jammed up in the bit and I have to pry the bastards out.

The only way I have ever set my jars up is with 1 layer of tyvek, an upside down lid with 2 - 1/4" holes drilled in them and then the metal ring screwed on. (the holes in the lid don't really matter that much just so long as the shit can breath a little bit). that is it since I usually do grain to grain transfers but when I want to inoculate from a syringe I put an extra hole in the lid and slap a blob of silicone on it.
Then I ::sterilize my substrate/spawn, ::let cool, ::take out and put jars on counter, ::spray area with oust for 10 or so seconds, ::using efficiency of motion(our goal is to have as little motion as possible) remove foil ::get syringe in one hand and lighter in the other, ::flame sterilize, ::put syringe through the silicone blob and then through the tyvek, ::blast on your substrate, ::and viola your babies will arrive shortly.
I've only went through a few hundred jars or so in my short mycology career so far but I've still yet to get a single contaminant in my jars. Good luck
