go pick up some RTV glue at a hardware store and create a self healing injection port somewhere on your jar.

No you can't inoculate through a filter disk or tyvek. Unscrew the metal band and lift it away. With your other hand slide the filter disk to the side and slide the needle into one of your drilled holes. Do the same thing on the other side of the jar and slide the filter disk back over top. Screw the metal band on and call it a day.

I wouldnt go sticking needles through my filter disks. did you already get the filter disks? I like to get small filter disks and glue them to the top of a jar lid with 5 small holes underneath.

Here's how I do it:

I drill 2 holes in each jar lid, both exactly 1/2 inch. The center hole I put in an injection port (10-13 cents each) and the 2nd hole I glue down a piece of tyvek cut off a painters tyvek suit.
It's a little more work initially, but it saves alot of work down the line and isn't expensive.

You can make injection ports yourself from silicone. Just make a hole in the lid and add a blob of silicone on both sides. Let it dry and there you have it.

I expect the rubber stopper ports to last a lot longer than the straight silicone blob ports. And when they are $2 for a 24pk, you cant really go wrong.

do you have to clean the lids any special way or do you not even have to worry about that?

The blue ports there fit perfectly in a 1/2" hole. The ports actually cost less then the RTV silicone and are easier/quicker to work with.
I put a blob of silicone on sheet of paper or something and use a qtip to smear a line around the rim of each hole and then just pop the ports in. Start to finish it takes me about an hour to do 3 dozen jars - all while watching tv.
After using I just wash them in the sink with my dishes. The main concern is making sure you remove any stuck grains that can get up into the ports during shaking.

O rly? My self made silicon ports have lasted just fine. And making them yourself is so cheap it doesn't matter even if you have to redo them every 20 grows or so...
Also you don't need RTV silicone. Any old silicone will work just fine.

RTV silicone withstands the high temperatures of a car engine. i'm sure if you compared regular and rtv silicone you would see the difference. also, it comes in that pretty red color.

I actually fill the inside of the blue injection port with silicone so no grain can get up there, and making a more sealed port. I just throw the lids in the dishwasher and they come out clean and ready to use.

So? You are not going to put your grain jars into a car engine, are you?
Regular silicone withstands the temperature of a pressure cooker JUST FINE.

But do you take the filter disk and injection port out first? if you got the filter disks wet, would that ruin it?

I agree, regular silicone will withstand pressure cooking temps just fine. Thats actually what i use. no need to get touchy dead. we're all just voicing opinions, and in my opinion, i would rather have the blue injection ports.

no, they can get wet just fine. They are glued on, and cant easily be removed.
