"White Rabbit" used in video game commercial
    #1004457 - 10/29/02 08:54 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I'm used to it by now, seeing commercials that use songs from the 60's that really meant something. Songs that inspired the counter culture to live out a psychedelic revolution. Songs that continue to inspire me. All used to hock some bullshit product.

The commercial that this thread is about is for the video game "Red Faction 2". It's a game about going around and killing things. The commercial is set to the tune of Jefferson Airplane's psychedelic anthem "White Rabbit". I can't really figure out why they used that song. Of course the whole song isn't used. Only the mellow instrumental begining, and the end where Grace Slick sings "remember............what the door mouse said............FEED YOUR HEAD..............FEED YOUR HEAD".

I'm not sure if I like it or not. Maybe Moby is right. Times have changed, and the only way for music that doesn't fit into the current popular catagorys to be heard is to use it in commercials. I know I would have never heard of Moby had it not been for commercials and movies that used his music.

Maybe having "White Rabbit" in commercials will create new interest in that song, psychedelic music and psychedelics in general. Maybe, in a way it was a commercial for the counter culture. I love it when i'm optimistic.

I guess the game is feeding the heads of the users but in a different way than the song refers to: instead of drugs it's video games --assuming the song is about a psychedelic experience. I don't play video games.

Cool. I've never heard someone say that before. It seems like i'm the only one who likes stuff like that sometimes. I was also shocked that a Shroomerite has offered to trade me "Bathing at Baxters" and "Volunteers".

I'm psyched about getting those if the trade ever goes down. He's been busy with school.

Don't get me started about Michael Jackson and "Revolution".

I like 'em too! They are one of my favorite groups! I had all their albums on vinyls, and most of them on CD. Have you heard anything by the Great Society? That was Grace Slick's band before the Airplane. White Rabbit and Somebody to Love were both recorded by the Great Society first. Pretty much a stripped down electric folk sound. I realy like them too!

I pretty much like all the San Francisco bands from that period. Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother and the Holding Company, It's a Beautiful Day, etc...

Regarding the song in the commercial thing. I guess, get used to it. It's the times. Moby is right, and he is sort of the Andy Warhol of the music scene. You can't turn back the clock...

Actually, I just listened to a couple of samples of The Great Society on cdnow.com. They sound alright. I wouldn't mind owning a copy of something that they did. Do you still have those cd's?

Interesting. They have a song called " Double Triptamine Superautomatic Everlovin' Man"

Yeah, i'd like to have that. I might have to add it to my "want list".

Yeah, they were a cool band. An interesting sound -- very sparse.

Grace worte a song with them called "Grimly Forming." It a great song. A lesser known punk/new-wave band convered it in the early eighties, but I can't remember who. Kind of wish I had a copy of that cover. I'd add them to your collection. They are pretty good. You couldn't find them on CD for a long time, but now both of their albums are available, as well as some rare B-sides. Most of their stuff if live recordings at SF clubs like Marty Balin's Matrix. They used to open for the early Airplane, that's how grace got hooked up with the Airplane for their second album, Surrealistic Pillow, and brought here to big hits with her.

I looked it up on cdnow.com, and found that a group called "Befour 3 O'Clock" did a song named "Grimly Forming". Don't know if it's the same song you're talking about.

"Sounds like someone's living in the past, man.

i understand a priori that this could just be a private joke. Having said that, and the risk of seeming to be even more of an imbecile than i have portrayed myself to be(until now, stay tuned for further developments  ) i must honestly say that statement could be as easily, if not more so applied, to those that listen to classical music, be-bop etc.

Sure i really enjoy some of Orbital's music........Tool for sure, Tori Amos.....and even SOME iced earth, but as music is truly timeless and emeanating from deep within the human spirit i honestly think/feel that one does themselves a GR8 disservice by blocking out the past in order to appreciate the new.....

On a saner note, Baxters's, Crown of Creation and Volunteers are 3 or the GR8est albums/records/Cd's ever recorded, especially in light of the existing Balin/Kanter slick/kaukonen cassidy triaxis that existed at the time this music was performed/recorded.......

Thanks! I think that is was the group, and yes, it was a cover of the old Grace Slick/Great Society song. Too Cool! I wonder if I can find it for download on one of the P2P services. That would bring back some memories from 15-20 years ago.

Freak: I like Tori too, but do you ever feeling that she is sort of doing Kate Bush's act, and making more money from it? I would have liked to have seen Kate become more popular than she was. Maybe she was just ahead of her time.

Bah, this happens all the time though. Recently I saw some comercial for some drug or something using the Beatles "When I'm 64" 'cept it wasn't Paul singing. Then in another drug comercial, Alegra I think it is, they used what I am convinced is the Overture to the Who's Tommy. The latter has not been verified, but I am 90% sure it is though.

(I really can't imagine being upset by that.
Does a tired 60s drug anthem even have
meaning anymore? The hippies all bought
Lexus or were employed by the hippies
driving Lexuses to sell 60s nostalgia to
kids.

The 60s are dead, yo. Nostalgia is
poison. I think Jello Biafra said that.
But punk is dead, too. And he had
to say it because it's dead and he's
been selling punk nostalgia to kids,
just like the 60s kids.

The Clash's 'London Calling' is in
a Jaguar commercial. The Velvet
Underground licensed a song for
a tire ad.

So, um, like, see, the whole thing is
meaningless. It's just a fossil. It has
no meaning except a nostalgic sort
of meaning.

You've fallen for clever marketing by
Lexus-driving hippies.)

It's just selling a commodity with
another commodity.

You could say that buying a re-issued
copy of the album on CD perverts
the true message of the song or
whatever. Because it's just giving
money to a massive corporation.
You know? But no one would say
that, would they?

Where do you draw the line on when a piece of music is too old to listen to? I also listen to Bach and Mozart. Besides those two, I mostly like rebelious music. I believe that psychedelic music is the most rebelious form of music of all time since it was a driving force behind a movement that almost made the world do a 180 in conciousness. No other form of music has ever come close to doing what 60's psychedelic music did.

In reply to:

I believe you, but what song was it?

How's that?

In order to not give any money to massive corporations, I would have to go live out in the mountains or the desert or something.

The 'movement' was a big failure,
though. A massive failure that
really only changed the music in
video game commercials.

So, it's not that it's just 'old' and
that's why it's meaningless. The
people who made the song and
the people who created the, like,
'movement' that it's about have
totally abandoned it. I mean,
you can't use a song in a
commercial without permission.

It might be a great song. But
you can't say it's much more
socially relevant than, say,
'Hot in Herre.' The song might
have meant something at one
time but it's just a 60s relic
and meaningless nostalgia.

The way that nostalgia has been
marketed by the Lexus-driving
hippies- and not just marketed
by but also pushed on everyone
by the non-Lexus-driving ones-
is similar to some kind of
generational supremacy, you
know? 'The 60s totally, like,
revolutionized the world and
you fucking Gen X faggots
and your grunge rock and you
whatever generation with
you fucking nigger-music
haven't fucking done
shit. Look at what
we did. Listen to
the fucking
Jefferson
Airplane.'
And the whole
thing is pushed
everywhere in the
entertainment industry
because it's infested with
Lexus-driving hippies. And
intellectual sorts push that whole
generational supremacy idea, too.

They've been selling 60s nostalgia
since all of their heroes choked to
death on their own vomit.

What I'm trying to say is, someone
who was possibly born in the 80s
attaching significance to a 60s relic
like that is all because of the idea of
generational supremacy propogated
by 60s types and even their kids.

It could even be argued that any kind
of change, cultural change, was created
by corporations buying into what was
becoming a fad, instead of any sort of
populist movement. It was corporations
buying into a fad and intellectuals creating
the illusion of a populist movement after the
fact. And the Lexus-drivers buying into both
ideas even longer after.

Wow.

(It was 'Venus in Furs' in a Pirelli ad in the early-90s.
But a Google thing only shows two references to it.
So, who knows.)
