open air casing
    #1006890 - 10/30/02 05:01 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

does anyone know the link to the open air casing grow log that was posted a while back. i think the casing was done in a cardboard box lined with plastic. the resullts were really great. has anyone attempted to recreate this grow? a friend of mine was intrested in trying an experiment with some leftover straw she had.
thanks folks

Before i bought aquiriums I used cardboard boxes with trash bags lining the inside and covering the top held humidity and all that.

Check out Old Timer's Straw Tek.
Essentially, you crumble(grind-blender-real fine) a cake or 2 ( .5pt/ft3 is fine) per cubic foot of straw . alternating layers of straw(he used wheat) and cake "dust" up to aprox. 4in. The mycellium restablishes itselfin a matter of days because by grinding the cake your creating thousands of innoculation points

A casing layer isn't necessay(open air) but using one, besides providing a protective barrier against contams, will also increase yeilds.

yeah that sounds good but i think i should clarify myself a little better. when i speak of "open-air" i mean a casing not put into any sort of container to maintain humidity or any other specifications. the post was from "myco(something?) and the mushrooms were huge.
