Mold or Mycelium??

So I have an experiment with some b+ and it has taken approx. 4 weeks. I am curious as to how to tell the difference between mycelium and mold. I am pretty sure its mycelium but I have read on here that it probobly shouldnt cover the vermiculite on top of the cake...if it does is it mold?

Do you have holes for gas exchange? Normally you would see more growth after 3 weeks

slow grower or not, after a month you should have more than that. do you store this container in a shoebox? It should be on a dark shelf where it can exchange air. are you incubating? what temps is it kept at? do you have a dry layer of verm on top? this acts as an extra contam. barrier. how many innoc. points did you use? should be four air holes in the lid. alot of variables here. tell us more.

all excellent questions... they are stored in a cardboard box.. they are stored at room temp 70 degrees or so. there is a dry layer of verm on top. some have 2 holes on top.. others have 4. the ones with 4 are much further along now. they are on BRF+verm
by incubating do you mean warming them?

at least leave the lid off the box so the jars can breath, but keep in dark place.

that temp is fine. don't let them get past 80 or under 65.

four holes allow for more gas exchange, hence, further progress.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. room temps are fine.

take the micro pore tape off at this point and colonization should speed up!
Looks like you have fine grade verm this could cause myc to slow from what i read. But you should have more growth than that imho....
Your temp is ok could be a little warmer but be carful not to dry the cakes with to hot of temp. Keep it under 80!
No light!
Always use four inoculation points, it will colonize much faster which you have learned.
Looks good just be patient and take the tape off and see what that does!

If the tape comes off.. that will leave open holes straight to the cake... Is that safe? Wouldnt there be a worry of Contams? I thought that was the reason for it...

oh yea that probably isn't good.... Usually people put a 1/2 inch layer of dry vermiculite on top of the already mixed verm/BRF/water, this will help keep contaminates out. I don't have any experience without the dry verm layer.
Definitely next time you make your cakes place some dry verm on top of the wet mixture!

you didnt make a layer of dry verm at the top? if not then careful removing it, perhaps cover them with coffee filters to keep stuff from falling in
and i agree it looks very packed down, most likely slowing growth.

If you made a layer of dry verm on the top like you are supposed to then no need to worry, just take the tape off. The layer of verm will act as a barrier to keep contaminants out.

Well its definitely myc, but you should have more than that. Some of my half pint jars of B+ are at 80% in just 10 days :S

I'm gonna jump in here and correct one thing. There's no need to incubate in the dark, light is only a pinning trigger AFTER full colonization AND combined with fresh air.
Here's where I let my jars colonize and fruit them nearby :-D

You really wont know for sure until you take it out, except that most molds grow exceptionally fast compared to cubes.
If it fully colonizes in a couple days, it's probably mold.
You've got two choices when doing PF.
Option 1 is to put a dry verm layer on top and no other form of filter.
Option 2 is to skip the dry verm and use something like tyvek.
I shake my pf cakes to speed up colonization, so using a dry barrier is just a waste of valuable container space to me. But I also use injection ports + tyvek filter patches.

I think one or both of the following is likely:
- Bad substrate recipe (perhaps too wet?)
- Bunk syringe

thank you everyone for all the valuable info.... There is a dry layer on top of the cakes....So that means I can take the tape off? Correct? And that will speed up incubation? The media looks pretty packed but its not to bad...

I will take some new photos tomorrow.. i believe its myc but wanted to get other ideas as well. I think I will take the tape off of one of the cakes that is the furthest behind.

Oh it's for sure mycelium. You do have a problem, though, which is what I speculated on in my previous post. If it's taken you a month to get to that point, you may wish to start over and do a new batch of cakes.
