next step from brf pf tek
    #10066719 - 03/29/09 01:52 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

well i'm half way through a grow... and find the pftek alot of work for the reported yield at the end of it.

what's the best way to move on from this?  i've still got 20ml of multi spore syringe..
and i was thinking of moving to wbs spawned to ... poo or compost.

considering the uk is pretty cold.. would a mono tub be most appropriate?
could you do a monotub/tub in tub.
where you have the inner tub as a monotub?

if not a monotub what?
cos i need something that i could keep warm for the fc... like a tit with an open lid (for fae)

thanks
b

well here's another issue...
i'm going to use a shotgun fc (RR)
but my room is pretty cold.. so i'd have to run the space heater while in this period... problem is, that eats up electricity at (£14 a week)

so i was thinking moving on to individual casings in a tit or a monotub/tit.
(picture below...)

provided i had the lid off and used the tit method of keeping it warm... would that be appropriate as an fc too
(if i incubated rye jars.. and then spawned to the 'incubator' monotub in another tub with heater?
otherwise i don't know how i could do casings economically...

does that ^ all make sense?

Here's that idea...  made a picture..
could this work as an fc as well as an incubator? provided i had the lid off.

You could get a thermostat to adjust the temp of the water to differentiate between incubating and fruiting but i would cover the bottom of the inside tub with tin foil or something to avoid side pinning. and use a clear lid with holes in it or put plexi in the middle of your lid(als drill holes in what ever isnt plexi  to for light and if you can afford it use a bubble stone setup for fae. it's what i'd do but idk much lol:)

Your FC should be at least 5-10*F cooler than your IC. If you were to use one tub as both run heater for IC and turn off for FC.

Edit: Also leaving the lid off when using as a FC would probably not be a good idea as you will have problems keeping RH high enough

if yield is what you are after you need a monotub and you need to keep your room temp and humidity up, so 78-79 for incubation 72-74 for fruiting, get something that generates heat and a small thermostat.

BRF cakes are for shits and giggles, sure they require some work but so does everything else in this area.

i've rethought it a bit....

if i had a monotub.. with filters and everything.. and incubated it like in the following link (using a monotub instead of sg fc)

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9237989#9237989

would that work? and could i fruit from it .. provided i drilled alot of holes in the lid and top of the sides..?

i'd really like to know if that'd be possible .. as i want to move away from cakes quicktime.

thanks v.much

cakes are convenient and if they fail its not a big deal because hey its a cake, if a monotub fails... thats a lot of work in maintaining, colonizing, fruiting, misting, fanning, everything that went into it to fail.

there are plenty of teks for monotubs that work with a few LARGE holes and some tyvek and polyfill.

cakes are also good for perfecting a specific isolate of strains (good fruiter, potent, etc)

I would honestly tell you to start isolating and then test some isolates on cakes, you might be surprised about what you get/find.

i'll try and clone some bad boys from these cakes...
but i would like to either do some casing trays (better success rate)
or a monotub (eggs in one basket.)

if i were to do individual casings in a shot gun fc... (the same fc that i'll fruit my cakes in)
would that be a logical step forward over a monotub?

The next step up, in my opinion would be to spawn your cakes to bulk.  Doesn't necessarily have to be alot of bulk. I just set up some mini-monotubs this weekend.  1 pesa tub with 3 quarts pesa grain to 3 quarts of bulk substrate and another chitwan tub with 1 quart spawn to 2 quarts substrate.

And 2 ultra minitubs with half pint of wbs and half pint of bulk sub.

Just to test out some new strains I've got going on a small scale.

yeh i'd love to do just that...

problem is i'd have to make a Tit  / monotub  for each mini monotub.
as the ambient temp in my house is pretty cold..
i'm considering buying two more aquarium heaters (already got one) and six containers...
that way i can have an incubator, a monotub/tit and a heated FC (Tit fc)

what a fridickin pain in the arse...  if only i lived somewhere warm :grrr:

What's the ambient temp?

My house is pretty cool in the winter/spring, but I keep one small room heated for my mushies.

Try whole brown rice spawned to coir/coffee/verm. You won't need a PC at any point.

WBR will be rinsed and then boiled for 10 minutes. Rinsed again and drained until dry on the outside, then loaded into jars, a pinch of gypsum added to each jar and steam sterilized for 2 hours (pint jars).

Then the WBR will be inoculated, let colonize to 100% and then spawned to a coir substrate at 1:3 spawn ratio. Let the bulk colonize, dunk and enter fruiting conditions.

could you maybe point me to a tek describing this method... and one thing that confuses me is how do you dunk a bulk substrate??? you would have to use your bath tub or something wouldn't you

haha wrap the damn monotub in a sleeping bag. this will keep the temp fine and prevent light. simplest is usually easiest. the tub in a tub would theoretically work but would be annoying and just visualizing a grow using the proposed setup would end up in wasted money and that setup in the trash. just my opinion but sometimes I catch myself being too elaborate, also. to each his own, good luck

How you dunk your bulk substrate depends on how/where you fruit it.

If you make a monotub, you just pour the tub full of water.

If you make trays that you put in your FC like I do, you just dunk them like cakes. In a bucket with something heavy on top to keep them submerged.

You don't really need a tek for preparing WBR. Just do it like I described above.

As for preparing the bulk substrate, I have a recipe for a coir/coffee/verm bulk in my journal...
