I just water mine with a cup of water. Seems to work fine and isn't a big hassle.

the only way I know to sterilize WBS is by pressure cooking it at 15 psi. an hour is sufficient for a quart jar.

dead said: How you dunk your bulk substrate depends on how/where you fruit it.
If you make a monotub, you just pour the tub full of water.
If you make trays that you put in your FC like I do, you just dunk them like cakes. In a bucket with something heavy on top to keep them submerged.
You don't really need a tek for preparing WBR. Just do it like I described above.
As for preparing the bulk substrate, I have a recipe for a coir/coffee/verm bulk in my journal...

but surely if you had spawned to horse poo .. and then dunked the trays they would fall apart??

I find it's just easier to pour a glass of water on them and let them soak it up overnight.
I've had some stubborn cakes not want to absorb any water, in which case I took a fork or spoon and dug out some small holes and poured the water in there. Didn't seem to hurt them, they flushed again just fine.

No. The mycelium holds it together. If your substrate falls apart while dunking then it's not fully colonized.

Well, the reason we dunk substrates, and use weights to force them down, is that when they're submerged, the water pressure forces the moisture through the cell wall of the mycelium. If you just soak them in water it won't absorb nearly as much moisture as when you dunk them properly. This is why cakes & trays need to be weighed down to keep them fully submerged in the water.

I did not read everyones answers in this thread so forgive me if I repeat something that has already been said but in my opinion(If you have a PC) is rye>manure or coir and than to the fruiting chamber of your choice I used to like greenhouses best when I was growing.Click the link in my Sig.It is a great way to learn what to do with rye when 1st using it and after you ditch the incubator part it is not even half as complicated as it looks at is more than well worth the effort

I didn't know about the pressure being a factor but that makes great sense, thanks!
