ok so im new myself...but i have a very healthy first flush coming in. I got a case FULL of pins...case is 6 cakes. So i was thinking today that i want to answer questions i had that were answered by experience. SO here we go.
(1) be patient when colonizing jars!!!! SERIOUSLY! I started with 12 and ended up with 6.
(2) I've found that actually having ur incubator at 75-76 degrees F is very good for colonizing...including the casing layer.
(3) Don't do CAKES! its my first grow ever and i thought i was taking a significant risk doing a 6 cake case...but by looking at the results...im very happy i reconsidered to do a case.
(4) Stop judging what your case should look like. i grew amazons and it looked really really fuzzy on the case layer. i thought it might be cobweb mold. but i said nope not gonna spray the h2o2. glad i didnt because it was just very rhizomorphic mycellium.
(5) for me fruiting b/w 72-75 degrees F was very good for fruiting or pins.
(6) keep humidity throughout ur mushies like b/w 90-99% even fruiting. it doesnt matter.
Well i dont wanna make a super long post. i'll try to put up pics.
Thanks to all who helped and answered my stupid questions in the beginning!

well i mean in theory...same substrates always gonna be there...but from what i've seen you will get the same amount of shrooms mabye a lil more with case...but you get the shrooms faster with casing...you get like 2 big flushes and the rest dwindle down...cakes might produce the same weight but it takes longer i think.

Once you've seen cobweb it's hard to get it mixed up.

I had a whole batch of bulk sub get contam'd with cobweb awhile back. I checked on a monotub and the entire thing had an inch of cobweb over the top.
I sprayed it down with h202 and the next day the mushroom mycelium was growing good, got a nice yield out of that tub :-D
I prefer to case now because it's less work in the end. Only takes a few minutes to prep the mix and it cuts out the need for misting 5 times a day down to 1 or 2.
Now if I had a proper martha style green house going I wouldn't bother casing, but in monotubs or FC's I consider it essential.

(3) Don't do CAKES!
Good post except for that. After all my years, I still use cakes when called for. Not only are they great for beginning growers, but there's no faster method to get fruits, and no way to fruit multiple strains in less space than with cakes. When I do a series of strain isolations, I use cakes to find the best performers, and then future grows are done with grains spawned to manure in order to get more product.
One other thing just to help you give sound advice, the word 'case' doesn't exist in mycology. The word 'casing' is a verb, and refers to the act of applying a non-nutritious top layer, known as a 'casing layer'. It helps to get the terms right, thus not confusing the new folks trying to learn a new hobby. RR
