Spiders are generally carnivores. If you're afraid of having bugs in that room, keeping the spider in there will be in your best interests. He may eat any bug that might cause a problem.

A spider won't eat your plants.

I think you must have missed my post about the dreaded 'shroom eating spider'.  Thankfully they are quite rare though.
