In my experience, it will work, but it's not that great for growing mushrooms. It's very 'dense' and the mycelium will have a bit of trouble colonizing it - you'll need to add a lot of vermiculite to balance it out. The texture is really crappy (pardon the pun) as well - horse manure is much, much better.

Penis envy clone.. spawned to 40% Black Kow 40% Coir 20% coffee & Gypsum.. some states have better Black Kow than others, just give it a quick smell test to see if its properly leached and good to go.. click on the link to enlarge

hey koopa_troopa, (or anyone else really)
glad to finally see some specifics as far as black kow goes. um a couple of questions, (I'm also could be asking anyone who might know the answer). Did you dry out the black kow, or what? I bet though, i could use it right away, considering i have to bring it up to field capacity anyway. Oh btw, I'm asking this considering it doesn't need to be leached.
Oh another question (a bit off topic): I've found plantation earth at my local pet stores, they are saying that its equivalent to coco coir, is this true? They have the fiber kind too, but its not that. It's more ground up than that. um, it comes as a brick, and you add water...ugg but they don't call it coir. I think it is, anyone??
To the original poster: I'm defiantly using black kow with some koh samui SS, so ill tell you how it goes, if you want.

black kow will be different bc it is sold in many different states... usually those in the south will be the freshest.. i would recommend leaching it no matter what but give it the ol smell test.. if it has a sour smell def gotta leach it.. if it smells like delicious ol earthy dirt its pretty much good to go lol.. and never heard of the brand of coir your talking about but most come in the bricks that need hydrating as you described just use the omnicient and omnipotent google.. search the brand name im sure you will come up with something

Hate it! Black Kow in Texas sucks ass. Coir and verm produces much better yields in my "PERSONAL" experience. Also could be that I have MY METHOD DOWN FOR COIR AND VERM. I bought it once and tried 3 grows with it and finally, said. " I have wasted half a year on this shit!". Enough is enough I went back to the "tried and true".

I cant find black kow around my area, I found some online for $5.00, but they wanted $90 for standard shipping and $200 on nxt day for a 50lb bag. Glad someone post their input, isnt worth the hassle tryin too find it when you can just ask a horse farmer if you can shovel some shit. Even buy a 40lb+ bail of straw for $5 while your at it.
100lbs of bulk sub for $5 and 10mins scoopin.

probably my all time favorite thread too
+1
Yeah. I've read all of Bluelous threads! Hes a trip, and wish he was still around.
From what I've read in his testings of black kow, he will tell you it needs to be mixed with straw, but he got lazy, and his results suffered. But, that being said, not everybody is out to have HUGE amounts of mushrooms laying around. I think if you study Bluelou's teks for outdoor growing, it will at the least give a grower different perspectives to chew on.
I was looking for outdoor teks when I found Bluelou. The guys crazy, but has some KISS methods that will suit the needs of some. With alot of the other garbage posted on this board, at a minimum, hes a fun read that doesnt take himself too seriously.
EDIT: Here is a list of all of Bluelou's threads. ENJOY http://www.shroomery.org/forums/dosearch.php?where=body&tosearch=main&namebox=101992
