I just acquired a canoe that will be used for both fishing and mushroom hunting. Its been launched a few times but i have yet to really set it up in a way that will make for convenient paddling for hours on end. Photos will be posted as modifications are made.
If anyone would care to share their rigs please post!

I'm primarily after crappie but invariably end up catching a few to several bass in some locations.

Thanks, it's a vintage classic haahaa... the last production year for the corolla/tercel coupe with this body style. Lovingly referred to as the Bindlestiff Mobile
The roof rack mounts came from an old volkswagen, I built the rack itself from salvaged wood. It works great although the way I have the canoe tied down in the photos is horrible and potentially dangerous... it was sort of a quick job with materials on hand at the time of purchase -- it provided for a white knuckle ride.

I've got a 17 ' coleman scanoe with a square back that I clamp a 5HP outboard to.I also have a swivel seat with a back rest that clamps to the front seat.Gotta keep the ole lady comfortable. (can't find my pics right now.)It's been striper/blues fishing in the Atlantic, Salmon fishing in Lake Ontario/Salmon River, weekend camping/float trips on the Delaware River, Susquahana River smallmouth fishing, Chesapeake Bay crusin'... Best times were being towed by 30 lb salmon when I first hook up, and anchored in a nice pool casting 3 or 4 differently rigged fly rods to rising trout. My canoe is about 44 inches wide in the middle, and stable enough to cast and fight fish standing up... Well, not the salmon... I'll post pics if I find them . . .

Cool canoe with an even cooler car!
How much did you pay for the canoe? More than for the car??

I don't have a photo but I used to have a fishing canoe with outrigger floats. You could stand up in it and it would never tip or sink no matter what. I once got caught way out in a large lake in a major wind storm and was swamped with my dog. It would not sink and most likely saved my life. It took hours to get to shore however as being full of water it would hardly move.

Icelander: how did your dog handle that experience?
Kamek: You have impeccable taste. The car was $1,100.oo six years ago and aside from a blown head gasket two years ago (found a hillbilly mechanic that fixed it for $100.oo) it has been extremely reliable... 31mpg sans canoe.
The canoe was $400.oo on craigslist. I saw one by the same manufacturer recently for $150.oo, but it didn't have the transom end.
I made a cart from salvaged materials yesterday, which should make portage much easier.

Salvages and re-purposed

Here are a few photos taken while out floating a week ago... I think my iPod may have been a casualty of that trip.

Cool pics. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. Wish I could build stuff myself.
Wish I lived in the countryside. I'm getting fed up with big city life. Too much stress.

Damn 400 is not that bad. I don't want a aluminum canoe because, I would be white water rafting threw class 3 and 4 rapids.

You probably wouldn't want one that long, either...

how did your dog handle that experience?
He got really scared cause he could feel my fear. When we got to land he must have peed for five minutes straight. He was pretty cool though. I had a life jacket on him I made from a dog back pack. I miss that dog every day.

Dogs are awesome!
I like that canoe. A friend used to have one but it was one of those narrow ones that if you leaned over too far you went for a swim.

A couple of tips for you georgeM. When you transport your canoe on your car, instead of having one line going from the canoe to the blue tie down strap, you'll want to have two ropes attached to your canoe and then tie one of each of those to the tow hooks on either side of the front of your car, forming a triangle from the tip of the canoe with both tow hooks. Do the same for the transom end of the canoe also. Once the ropes are pulled tight and tied down, it will keep the canoe from swinging back and forth as you drive. Strap the middle down the way you did in your photos. You could use a single rope (each) for both ends of the canoe, it just a little more time consuming.
Tip #2. When portaging, place your cart closer to the back end of your canoe, around 1/4th from the transom but no more than 1/3rd. Doing so will help keep you from dragging the end on the ground and make it easier on your back, don't have to stoop so low to hold onto the tip of the canoe.

Thanks Gandalf, your tips on tie down are spot on, I know that was a horrible job in the photo, it was tied like that because I didn't have enough rope for two proper truckers' knots. Believe me, it was a frightening ride with that rig, there was a forty mile stretch of road where I didn't exhale.

Great pics.
I'm just about to get into canoe fishing. Even more recent idea, how would a heavy duty rubber fishing boat do?
I'd like.. i dno, back rests possibly. 1-3 seat capabilities.
I'm not really sure where to start looking. Think i want to go new because you never know hidden dangers in buying a dry boat yeh?
Online here and there they usually seem to be priced 300-600. I need to look at a car rack as well, those seem to be 100-300. heh. Seems like a rather expensive investment. Well worth it tho i'm sure.
I would like to be able to put a small motor (electric outboard..?) on the back.
Dno where to start.
