mushy growing in jar
    #10026455 - 03/23/09 01:46 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Hi everybody =)

So I'm a first timer here using the jar/brown rice method.

Although the substrate is not completely covered with the fungus in all jars, one of the jars looks like it's starting to form a little mushy inside.  Is this bad??  I would like to place them all in the growing chamber at the same time, but will it hurt the fungus to leave it in a jar with a mushroom growing inside of it??

Thnx!!

-K

Ps.  it's really lame when people argue about trite things on forums, so if you don't have anything insightful to say, please don't say anything at all!!

I'd say if you're close to full colonization (+1 week) on all the jars, wait a few days and see if they catch up. Otherwise, I'd scrape off anything uncolonized on that one, take the one shroom off, then dunk & roll.

My reasoning is that I wouldn't want the mushroom in the jar to rot (if it sits too long) and I would fear that it is contaminated if it's not fully colonized, but already fruiting. -- The contamination (if there is one) shouldn't be a problem at this point if you just remove the uncolonized portion.

Hey everyone, I was actually just about to start a very similar post and saw this, so I figured I would just post a reply here.

I used the PF Tek and I have 10 jars which are currently anywhere from about 97% to 100% colonized. They did not all colonize at the exact same rate, though they were definitely close (within 5-7 days of each other).

Anyways, I just saw that in two of my ten jars, it looks like there is some sort of pinning trying to start? I cannot tell exactly, but I cannot imagine what else it could be. Anyways, I was going to wait until about Sunday or so to birth all of my cakes at once, which would give even the last jars about 5 days or so after 100% colonization.

I'm not sure what to do now, though. Should I birth these sooner? The "pins" if that's what they are are very tiny and there is only maybe one or two, so I'm not sure how long it would be recommended to leave them in the jars? Please let me know. Thanks.

Here are a few pictures, sorry about the poor quality, but if you can see what I'm talking about let me know what you guys think:

Jar 1 (look near the top center of the jar)

Jar 2 (couple of brown spots quarter way up center on first picture, halfway up center on second)

Thanks again!

wait for full colonization and then dunk and roll like normal, leave the pins on and hope that they grow into some huge shrooms!

Thanks for the response. The jars with pins are at full colonization already actually, it's just some of my other jars which are not yet fully colonized.

I was going to wait for the rest of the jars to colonize and consolidate and then birth them all at once. Do you think I can/should wait another 5 or 6 days to birth them all, or should I birth these ones earlier? If so, how much earlier? I'm sure they COULD be birthed right now, so if I wouldn't be able to do them all at the same time later on (like Sunday) then maybe I might as well do them soon? What do you think?

Thanks.

How long is it safe to leave the pins in the jar? This might be a retard question sorry.

Yeah I guess that's kind of what I was asking, too. Most of my jars are actually looking like this now, so I think I will probably just birth them tomorrow, and then birth the last couple on their own a few days later.
