 What causes this? (Blue oyster clusters with different color caps)

This is a quart jar that I was going to use as spawn for sawdust bags, but I ended up making more spawn than needed so I decided to fruit directly from the spawn... here is a picture. As you can see, there is one large cluster that have grey caps, and the a few smaller clusters that have blue caps.

Civil war reenactment? j/k not sure but the grey caps look larger,
did you see them when they were small?

Yessir, I think they were grey the entire time. The grey ones formed first (which is probably why they are the biggest). The blue ones formed about a day and a half later.

That's pretty weird. I've seen cultures produce different mushrooms
when they were growing on different stuff, but never on the same thing.

Its caused by how much light they get. The more or brighter the light, the darker the caps. When they mature fully they usually end up looking more gray then blue.

ooooooh ok, that makes sense. The light definitely hits the grey ones more than the others. Thanks for the info.

Oysters seem to lighten as they get bigger. Maybe the darker clusters will be the same color when the get to be the size of the lighter clusters.

The other clusters do seem to be getting greyer as time goes on.. Here is a picture I just took:

They were all the same blue color starting out, you just didn't see the older, grayer ones fast enough.
