yet another question...
    #1005872 - 10/30/02 12:40 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I have 5 jars fully colonized and will be birthing very soon. I also innoculated another 6 jars last week. Im noticing that the jars are starting to dry out alittle around the top. This didnt happen with the other jars at all. Is there anything i can do like inject sterile water or something?

Just birth them and don't worry about it. If your grow environment is nice n humid, those cakes will be moist enough real soon. Also, you don't want to introduce anything into the jar once it's been sterilized and inoculated -- I think that's too risky.

ah i phrased my question bad...i meant to say that the jars that are just starting to colonize are drying out. The fully colonized ones were done with the same incubation method and this didnt happen.

Hmm. I dunno. I've never had this problem. Was the brf/verm/h20 mix the same for the recent batch as it was for the first batch? And why do you prepare your jars in such small batches? Why not just do a full dozen at the same time?

Are you incubating them and if so how high is the temp? Maybe take em out of the incubator and have em in mid-range room temperature for a while. And how can you tell that the cakes are "dry"? Seems to me that my cakes are all pretty dry when I birth them and they turn out ok. You could try dunking them right after birthing.

As for injecting more water into them, you'll need to ask a wiser myco-guy than I! Sorry!

i think i let the first 6 boil in the pot for alittle longer so they retained more moisture. The temp is a constant 82F which is heated by a heating pad. I know i know thats the reason its drying out but i have no other means of incubation.

I'm also new to this but I used a heating my first to batches but, I just got an aquarium heater. (good investment)
When I used the heating pad I always put a towel around it to decrease direct heat transfer to the jars. Then I put them in a box wrapped the jars in a blanket around the side put the pad and towel on top then cover that with another blanket.

doesn't sound like much but my jars were always evenly heated this way.

Your heating pad could be the cause for them drying.

Do you have $15? If so you can build a simple incubator using a fish tank heater and a styrofoam cooler. It works and won't dry out your jars.
