hey potato, good is not dumb.
good lacks malice, which means theres no need to try and be better than someone. which means theres no need to try and prove your worth.
actions speak louder than words my friend. and evil is gay, and take beatings from...ME

Not trying to prove my worth, Im just wondering if there is something that works faster? I dunno something I can make a cake with that might be easier for the mushies to take in, or something that increases the metabolic speed of the mycelium/mushies...
I know playing with genes can directly affect this but there has to be a way...

Rye flour works great for growing mushrooms. Works for cubes and other species.
I've gotten Psilocybe galindoi to fruit from cased rye flour pf cakes. I've also used wheat and spelt flour in the past. They both work but the wheat flour gives the mix a very sticky texture.
I'd say as far as the PF tek goes, rye and brown rice flour are the best.

Isolate a fast growing sector on agar plates. Use that culture to grow with. You don't have to "mess" with the genes to get fast growth. Just pick the genes you want (i.e fast colonizer) by isolating.

Some of the 'brf cakes' shown in my DVD were actually rice bran/verm from the refrigerated section of the health food store. I couldn't tell them apart from looking, or performance, from brown rice flour once put into the jars. Today, I drove to Spokane, WA to pick up a few dozen bee hives I bought from a guy who's retiring, and stopped at a feed store to get some other supplies while in the big city They had fifty pound bags of rice bran sold as horse feed supplement, so I bought one. I'll make up a few cakes next week and see how it works. Brans are normally more nutritious than flours since they have the whole enchilada intact instead of just the grain.
If it works out, the rice bran was $18 for a fifty pound bag, so it's a hell of a lot cheaper than brown rice and was already ground, although in flakes like oatmeal instead of flour. If it doesn't work well for cakes, at least I know it's a good sawdust supplement for my shiitake blocks. RR

i remember reading something a while back about adding olive oil or vegetable oil to your substrates to decrease the colonization times
