The "population problem" is really a resource problem.  It can be solved by solving world poverty while switching to sustainable farming methods, new urbanism, and clean energy.

thats very true, i read a book once where they were mining h3 from jupiter, and other metals n shit.
if it were like that population would be no problem

Fuck P.E.T.A...

Now why do you say that? Are you so self centered that you care not that other beings may suffer terribly on your account?:thumbdown::thumbdown:

I've met several vegetarians who hate P.E.T.A. as well.  I'm an environmentalist, but that doesn't mean I support Earth First.

Realistically it is technology and development that can allow all countries to experience zero population growth, given that they would have access to education, contraceptives and abortion. Even if abortion was left out of the picture, a world of 1st world nations wouldn't have a population problem.

and what about all the pollution...

i think its tied directly to population. especially of the 1st world.

how does the human race benefit long term by having such an enormous population? a population that is driven by massive amounts of consumption of non-renewable and finite resources.

This makes the assumption that 1st world standards mandate the massive consumption of non-renewable and finite resources. We burn a lot of oil, coal and wood, but technology will advance unless it's hindered.

"There is something to be said about the means to an end being more important than just the end result."

I agree, but either way, those animals are going to be slaughtered anyways, so how does collecting their methane make the whole situation any more inhumane, especially when in doing so, we drastically lower pollution rates?

"These are good ideas for sollutions to local problems...but it doesn't address the bigger picture."

You gotta start somewhere. You know how much snow there is at any given time on the Earth?

"You might be right about that. But how energy effecient is it to suck water out of the ocean, destill it, and then ship/pump it all over the place. Not very practical. Atleast not yet."

We could create a self-sufficient machine that derives its energy from the power of the seawater.

"I don't understand the need to make this point.

We are alive today there are resources for us to live off of. So what? They aren't limitless. And our ecosystem...as far as I can tell....is pretty rare..and delicate.
"

Neither are we limitless.

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

there are already well over a billion people without access to clean drinking water. we can continue to grow and continue consuming too much (like long showers and watering our yards) and polluting our water sources. eventually there will just be too many mouths to feed. i mean...i consider us already to be over populated seeing as how much of the world lives in poverty...if we can't all share a minimum standard of living then why continue to spread like a disease on this planet?

What I mean is that there will be a limit to nightmare-ish overpopulation in third world countries. If people don't drink, people die, and therefore don't have kids!
I don't think the Earth is overpopulated, but like someone already said, that the ressources aren't shared. Share is the key (but will it happen?).
But id you consider the Earth as already overpopulated, things are different.

Indeed.

Raped women do not represent most of births in Africa! The logic of having many child is cultural, and also deals with the fact that kids represent workforce. But population growth slows down when survival is endangered (if things keep on going that way, having a chance to survive in Africa is going to be quite a challenge).

I don't think people really deny it, they just don't really think about it, or care about it. But many people do care though, at least around me.
