Dried Mushrooms turn moist in bag :(

I just harvested 2 flushes of Penis Envy, and dried them with a food dehydrator (no heat). First flush was conpletely dry, but second one apparently wasn't. I put a few more in today, and noticed the mushrooms were moist and stinky. So I threw them back into the dehydrator... I notice some rot. What would you do?

They're still good, make sure you cut the pieces that have rot. Your harvest will do fine.

if they turned mushy in the bag they wernt all the way dry, i leave mine in the dehydrator an extra few hours when i think they're done. you should invest in some silica packets, thos things are great, i get em out of old shoe boxes and departmant stores lol

Thanks... I have a lot of friends counting on these babies, for our sping camping excursion. I'll dry em a really long this time, and cut off the bad spots then. Penis Envy are really thick... I should have known better, but I was too excited to notice. Peace.

no they dont work for drying mushrooms but they are oxygen absorbers and IF your mushers are ALREADY dry they help preserve
paint desiccant or whatever is what you're thinking about

Silica gel is a desiccant, they hardly get the job done though. Usually oxygen absorbers are composed of concentrated iron and such. You can get them easily in beef jerky snacks at any convenience store.

What drying method do you use? Where do you get your silica? I think those silica packets would be good for after you have completely dried the mushies, just to insure they stay dry.

You could always slice them up and then dry them. They'd dry a lot faster and better in general.

I use printing paper cause I'm pretty much broke lol. Just get 4 sheets of computer printing paper and use 2 of 2 for each opposite side, staple that baby after folding the sides and wait for a few days. Stuff really works, I also knew a guy who used cardboard too. Or you can air dry them, the natural way. If that doesn't float your boat you can just stick to the food dehydration machine you have, I highly recommend it. As for silica, those don't do jack. It will probably dry out small slices of mushroom within a matter of weeks. Not the fastest way to dry them. To better preserve your mushrooms, I suggest you get a glass jar and stick some oxygen absorber packets into them. You can find them all over the internet for purchase.

I have always had great luck with just laying freshies out on a screen and running a fan on high underneath them for a day. All the non-sense about potency being lost via air drying is CRAP. They come out cracker dry and potent as hell.

I've always just put all my shrooms on a paper towel and pointed a fan at them. within probably 3 or 4 days they're cracker dry and ready to be ground up into shroom dust. I've never had any problem with this method

A good way to dry large mushrooms is to halve or quarter them down the long way (cut through the cap and all the way down the stem) and dry as normal.

Hello, we are a Silica Gel manufacturer and we were contacted by a Shroomery member to ask if we could participate in this forum. After contacting the admin we are all setup and looking into being a supporter and sponsor of the Shroomery.
I would recommend using Silica Gel Packets in with your products after you have already dried them. If you are looking to dry your items that are moist with Silica Gel you will need a large amount to do so (about 200-900 grams) depending on the amount of product and how moist it is.
I think what most people might find who have problems using Silica Gel is they are reusing the Silica Gel that is inactive or past it's useful life. Pulling a used Silica Gel Packet out of a shoe box and thinking it has any useful life left is very unlikely. Also what some people might find is they are using an amount to small for the job. A small 1/2 or 1 gram packets isn't going to cut it in a gallon size bag with a few of your products that might already contain moisture.
Please feel free to message me, e-mail, or look me up on Yahoo IM if you have any questions or concerns.

I read this, then immediately went to check out the site. Before i could come back to post my opinion i placed an order already.
Any recommendations on how many 1 gram packets we should be using for a certain weight? Im referring to the silica gel packets. They are priced so good its kinda hard not to buy some, since they are protecting your hard earned goodies from getting moist and ruined again... i like being overprotective. If just 1 shroom is a little damp it could ruin the whole bag, throwing a couple 10 cent packets in would save it.awesome!

Heat does not hurt potency!
That is an old myth that gets passed around here over and over and over. You can dry mushrooms very quickly in the oven on a thick sheet of cardboard on top rack with oven on lowest temp and oven door open a few inches.
