Is it ok to post pics and what not? on this forum?

Just wondering what you guys think. I see that many people post pics of their shrooms and set ups, but are you people in the states? Or are you somewhere where the laws are lax?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure that the large majority of people who post pics are in the states or places where it's not legal to grow mushrooms. I think it is ok to post them as long as you're smart in how you take them, as in don't post pictures that have stuff that would give away who you are or where you live in the background. Just be careful in other words.

The general rule is, don't take the picture next to your mailbox, or papers with your name on them.

Okay, cool thanks. But what about posting and your ip address? Is that a concern to anyone?

As far as I know, the only way that could be accessed is by the administrators of this forum, and once you get to know them, I believe they are very trustworthy people who would never give an ip address out to anyone, especially law enforcement. I could be wrong though, and it may actually be possible to access an ip address based on a post, but to my knowledge, no one has ever gotten busted this way.

If ordered/subpoenaed I would hope, though I don't think they've ever given their position on whether they will require a subpoena or court order prior to disclosing personal information.
I do know ythan's said he's never been asked in any way for ip addresses, bu really, all they'd have to do is send you a private message with a picture in it.

This is from the privacy statement
IP Logging: Your IP address is like your telephone number on the internet. It may change from time to time, but while you have it, it's unique to your computer. IP addresses can be used to determine the identity of your ISP (internet service provider), and to discover its general geographic location. Your ISP keeps log files which can be used to match your IP address with your account information.
Like most websites, The Shroomery maintains an access log which includes IP address information. This is done for our security and yours. These logs are deleted from the server periodically, but we make no specific guarantees about their longevity. We reserve the right to log IPs at any time. To prevent your IP address from being logged you must access the site through a proxy server. The site's functionality may be impaired when using a proxy.
The Shroomery is incorporated and hosted in the United States. In the event that we are served with a legal subpoena, we may provide the information as required by law.
My only comment is that this sounds like a reasonable and well thought out privacy policy and I like the part that says "but we make no specific guarantees about their longevity".

That doesn't work, I just tried it. Pictures are filtered from private messages. You can send a picture link in a private message but if the person doesn't click on it then you will never see the IP. You can include offsite images in journal entries and posts and then log the IP's of people who view those, but its hard to put a specific username on that info.

Oh ok. Still, getting someone to view an image can't be too hard.
Don't the moderators have access to IP information? That's gotta be among the weakest links.

Basically anything that obscures your ip wil be good. Some proxy system will help and prevent the immediate association of your ip with your browsing.
The problem is that the proxy will be able to know your ip, so it doesn't really remove the problem, only makes the number of people that could loose the information or refuse to provide it longer.
In the sarah palin emails, I think, it was some anonymous proxy provider that provided the information to law enforcement. I don't think that guy even required a warrant or subpoena. Given that the site was based on anonyminity and I believe it said it regularly purged logs, that's not too comforting.
Someone should start a true anonymity site (as close as you can get with one proxy and not a lot of money) and accept money orders or work off of ads (if possible, probalby not). I believe there's nothing prohibiting them from operating without logs.

That's true. You have to give the logs up if a subpoena arrives, but that only applies if they exist. Tor doesn't keep logs.

Or host your server off of US grounds, if I remember there was a good joke about google wanting to float their servers in international water to avoid handing over searches.

How would that avoid legal process? And google would be particularly easy to deal with given their need to have access to the american economy.
Alan, that's nice, much better than I had thought. I am impressed with shroomery's openness regarding security and its problems and the way they respond to security concerns. Reading the thread in administration feedback where gtfo was denied a modship due to his conduct was pretty cool.

They don't have to respond to subpoenas from the US government if they are not hosted within US borders.

I understand your reasoning, I was asking you to support it.
I'm not sure that's correct. I believe a ship or other body is under the jurisdiction of the country it origniated from or docks at. And I would imagine even if possible, you'd have to choose between being protected by the country and being able to do what you want. i.e. you'd have no legal protection if you were truely nationless, and could be fired upon or whatever.;
And like I said, all the US would have to do would be to require certain records to be furnished before companies like google can operate in the US and then they would be screwed. And the location of the servers isn't the end all be all of subpoena jurisdiction. I believe the subpoena is properly issued in any district of the US where the infromation is found
EDIT: I'm not trying to be contentious, I was just wondering if anyone knew whether or not this would work.
For things other than piracy or shit that will get you invaded, something like sealand would be awesome. If you actually are a country, debateable, you can get away with quite a lot.

A little off topic- but, a ship in international waters is under the jurisdiction of the flag it is flying. If it wants to go to two consecutive US ports, it has to be US-flagged.
Still, though, if a company wants to do business in the US, it has an incentive to conform to US legal judgments.

my vote is to give 0 indication that you are anything other than an interested reader. an ip address can lead to someone finding your actual address so use caution.

There should be a way to host the server in the Netherlands, Switzerland, or Costa Rica

I still stand by my idea that Ythan or another admin should implement the option to strip Exif data from galleries and uploads, that way you can totally remove any evidence of location/camera/etc.
