12 hour work day anyone?
    #10041086 - 03/25/09 07:20 PM (15 years, 25 days ago)

So let me introduce myself,
Im from Canada, go to university (20 yrs old), and like any student...i am poor...
now, I am up for a job this summer that has a 12 hour workday rotating days and nights, which I have never done before...and I imagine it will be quite strenuous...which is why it will be nice to have a few days off a week,  I also figure I;m lucky to have any job offers with the economy in shambles...
I am just wondering if any of you have worked a 12 hour workday in a manufacturing plant.  I am just curious how you found it.

I am planning on accepting the job, but I want to know what I'm in for so I can mentally prepare...
Thanks in advance!

I did 12 to 14 hour construction shifts in my late teens for a while. The only suggestion I can make is lots of coffee and lots of cigarettes. You do get used to it, but youll also learn to appreciate sleep on a whole new level.

Oh dude.
12 hr manufacturing shifts are bullshit.
especially if you're on a conveyor belt.
if you're getting less than 15. i would advise against taking it.

if you want a summer job where you don't have to do fuck all and earn money at the same time, the solution is simple.
security.

if you live in ontario, get your security license and apply with every company that advertises.
easy money.

i dont know how the security industry works in other provinces..im sure it's similar.

i know people work in hospitals for 12 hrs, but thats usually just 3 days a week.  if your gonna do this, figure out exactly how many hours your going to work, and i suggest altering your diet to the healthiest you can, exercising alot a month before the job to get ready, and pray.  oh and buy an ipod

my job will be 3 days one week 4 the next, 44 hours a week with the option of overtime...
ill be manufacturing telecommunications
i will also be bringin lots of bud and mushies up with me to ease the pain lol
the scariest part for me is the day/night swap...that will fuck me up so hard
I realized i would need alot of coffee for this job, but i dont want to take up smoking :frown:
It is a summer job, so only for 4 months...
as for security, that is a great idea, i think i will pursue that certificate...unless they do drug testing inwhich case im effed
thanks for the suggestions guys and keep em comin!

next week = off - Mon Tue / work - Wed Thur / off - Fri Sat Sun

switch to nights the on the third week and do it over again

If your only doing it for the summer you can handle it.

12 hour days ain't shit imo.

Would I rather work 8.......hell yea.

The time will go by fast, you'll get some money.

I was actually just thinking about this..

I was working 12 hour days 6 days a week in a warehouse for a few weeks in January, and they flew by.

I had no freetime, but the time spent at work was good - i was super stoked to work hard and keep busy, just so i wouldn't look at the clock and then the day would be over before i knew it.

Now im working 5 hours, 2 days a week and the shifts drag on and on.... I prefer longer days, and 3 day weekends are a major perk.

Caffeine on your lunch will be your best friend.

What will you be doing exactly?

5 hours 3-4 days a week here. It's boring as fuck. I can't even go on the shroomery. :frown: They say our computers aren't monitored

I end up taking so many cigarette and coffee breaks just hoping the worthless day goes by. Some days I don't even get assignments because my immediate boss is a worthless piece of shit and it's just terrible. At times, I walk around parts of the campus that I've never been around before just to see what's there.

But it's GREAT pay.

Come summer, though, comes the inevitable 6pm - 6am shift stocking at a grocery store.

As you probly missed, cause your stupid, I said earlier that I feel l;ucky to have any job offers at this time...and should I be sorry im only 20 and have never had to work at a job liek this before?
I will be manufacturing telecommunications devices (phones and that type of stuff)...
I know its illegal to work more than 5 hours without a break (in canada, at least) so I know that I will be given breaks throughout the day.
It is a well known and respected company so I am not worried about reliability of the firm, just the timing...

What is the best way(if any of you know) to switch from day mode to night mode?
I figure ill just get home at 7pm one day and play source or shroom all night and pass out in the morning, then just keep passing out in the morn...but im not sure if this will work or just make me so fucked up i cant function lol
any ideas?

I only did 12h once when I did overtime at work, I prefer just sticking to 8h's.

I pulled 12 hours shifts for about a year, 4 day weeks and 3 day weekends which I really miss...  the cash was great since I worked overtime everyday

The shift on your sleep sched can be tough to deal with at first. Particularly getting to sleep when you know you need to be up again and all you want to do is unwind. The hardest part I found though was making time for friends and family; between doing the running about and going to work so frequently you find you have very little time to spare. Usually $$$ isn't an issue for a while at least though.

i used to work 12 hour days for a couple month period. but the last 5 years I have worked 8 hours days. i love days like today when i only work 5-915.

i am not sure about canada's labor laws but that is 4 hours of overtime a day there right?

I would say go for it. it will be hard to get used to but with the extra days off and overtime it will be worth it. anyways you get an hour lunch and prob. a lot of 15 min breaks.

Prepare to have no life beyond work.  Once the 12 hours is up all you will do is eat, clean & sleep then the cycle repeats.

When you work off on Thursday evening
take some uppers and stay up all night
crash sometime Friday morning around 9-10 am
take a sleeping pill, it will help to keep you asleep all day
otherwise you will wake up around 1-2 pm and not be able to go back to sleep
Try to sleep until 5-7 pm Friday evening
Then start a new "day"
Get used to having to keep yourself entertained
Not many people to talk to at 2 am
lots of surfing the shroomery, playing video games and watching movies.

It takes some getting used to but that is the easiest way
to force yourself into a night schedule.

Reverse the schedule for switching back to days.

I begged them to do a 4 week rotation. But they wouldn't.
It takes your body about 2 weeks to get used to the night shift
then you have to switch back around. :argh:

I love working nights in a factory, not as many bosses.
I found someone who wanted to go straight days.
I wanted to go straight nights
So we swapped shifts.

Even in America labor laws don't go by the day they go by the week.
Once you have reached 40 hours for the week, then the overtime starts.

:ilold:

On my 6-6 shift we got a 15 minute break at 9
a half hour lunch around 12 and another 15 min at 3

I have never had a factory job that gave you an hour for lunch

as stated by others, i work a 44 hour work week, the option of overtime is that i would come in on a day off and work a bonus 12 hours...

I want to be able to live without pharmacuticals (preferrably) or blow...
i figure lots of coffee and amped will help get me thru it?
Also, i hear salvia keeps you up just because of the trip intensity...so maybe lots of that?
niteowl, that is a great idea...I'll look aroudn for someone to swap with to keep things consistent (though im not even sure if i'll be allowed to do that :frown: )
Thanks for the experiences and tips guys, maddd appreciation!
