What is the likelyhood of these shrooms having absorbed toxins from the environment, either from plants, other shrooms or environmental pollutants?? Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I have read that eating shrooms that grow with eucalypt trees or possibly peppercorn trees can make you sick. If so what is a safe distance for them to be away from said tree or plant.

Don't worry about that, mushrooms are good at filtering out plant toxins.

They will accumulate heavy metal toxins but its not a big deal.

Quote:

From the pics, you can see that they obviously have grubs hiding in them.

You could boil them for a minute and make tea if you are paranoid.

No reason to be paranoid though, these grubs won't hurt you.  If you are a vegetarian you can dry the mushrooms to make the bugs leave.

Too many bugs will cause rot, thats what you need to worry about.  Rotting mushrooms will look and smell rotten.

Quote:

Do YOU eat shrooms from the wild, or is it simply safer to grow your own.

Its a lot more fun to eat them from the wild.  Growing shrooms is not nearly as fun.

Quote:

Would you eat these shrooms??????

They are beautiful mushrooms and there is nothing wrong with them.  Since i can see the purple-brown print and blue staining the chance that they are a toxic lookalike is 0%.

My first time shrooming was about 20g fresh P. Subaeruginosa straight out of the wild, bugs and all. Was an awesome trip, no nausea or anything, laughed hard as, these were from Syd though. Ive heard the weather is crankin in Vic at the moment so I encourage those interested to go down there for a look. Ill be getting out in a month or so, still too lame around Syd at the moment.

In regards to the season,
I wouldn't bother yet, the temperature is still too high, wait till we have a series of sub-10 nights, and some decent rain.

Best of luck.

Thanks everyone. Some very encouraging info here.
Looks like I'll be going on my first proper trip this season ;-)

I'm inland Vic, so the weather is warming up again. Just being prepared this year, rather than being late on the scene like last year.

I'm looking forward to cold wet weather now!!!!!!

Ahh ok, yeah, I think mothers day will mark the official start of the season in my area, I can't wait :mushroom2:. I thought I had found some in one of my spots, they turned out to be look-alikes though :mad2: I guess it'll be about a month until I see some subs.

Hey guys, as for mushrooms groups under/around eucalyptus trees, I don't think there is much of a threat. I have eaten many from these areas with no negative side effects (that I am aware of at least). As it becomes closer to season sometimes in Vic the govt sprays some popular areas with fungicide to prevent them growing. This can cause a problem if consumed, however areas such as these can usually be identified with bright colors sprayed around the areas (usually bright pink, blue and yellow colors) avoid anything found in these areas. As for grubs, like spong mentioned, drying them out should get rid of any creepy crawlies. If still cautious boil them into a tea, this will get rid of bacteria too, plus it will taste great and come on stronger. As for growing, subs are cold weather and a lot harder grow from what I have heard. In Aus it's probably just easier to find your own. You won't have any issues if you know what you are picking. If in any doubt just post them here or don't eat them. As you probably already know there are deadly galarinas which grow amongst subs, so confirm every specimen before consuming. I am starting to get excited now too, we're not too far off, I'm not sure if I will pick or eat any this year, pretty keen to take some photos though, for me they usually pop up around mid April, this year has been pretty wet though.
Good luck.

Hmmm, I went for a walk to check out my patches, and it was pretty bloody dry. However I noticed that several small tree's had been cut down and laid down on the ground. The remaining stumps were painted pink. They were not next to my patches, but a mere short walk.

So I'm getting paranoid again!!!! Bastards better not be poisoning my mushrooms.

Would the mushrooms look un-healthy though, if they had been sprayed with anything?

On another note, my soil sample has sprouted white hairy mycelium from where a mushroom had dried up and oozed back into the soil from last year. Interesting.

Don't worry, most pesticides are actually vitamins that make you super healthy if you eat them.

Its a dirty secret that the organic food industry is trying to keep quiet.

If worst comes to worst, now that you know what your looking for, you can find many different patches. Its better to have a few to choose from than finding out some one has cleaned out the patch and ripped everything out the ground so nothing will grow there again.

Yeah I've found a couple of inactives around, there was a bunch of mushroms that looked just like subs at school last week, i even picked one to see but they turned out to be a smaller inactive mushroom  theyre not too far away now, i've already built a drying machine for them :smile2:
