The Debate to end all Debates
    #1004357 - 10/29/02 10:25 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

(at least in my mind)

Ok, so not too long ago I posted asking you guys which was better Pasteurization or Sterilization for 50/50+ mix. The general agreement was Sterilization, then in the last couple of days it was stated in a post that Pasteurization was preferable due to the helpful microbes present in the peat. So, what's the deal?

As stated HERE in the FAQ, pasteurization does have the benefit of leaving behind beneficial microorganisms, as long as you do it right, it's better.

I say pasteurize.

And I've found generally that I can use most cultivation material with minimal or no sterilization or pasteurization at all!

I've cased repeatedly with verm straight from the bag. I use perlite in the fruiting chamber straight from the bag. I use bagged cow manure having nuked it for 5 mins or baked it at 175 for 1 hour. I once opened up a stalled mycobag and dropped a hunk of mycelia onto the substrate w/ a pair of tweezers. I recently used millet in my boiled pf-style jars with no problem. I use plain tap water for spraying and mixing substrates & casings. And I never get contams.

Why? Because I'm an obsessive-compulsive li'l fuck. I naturally wash my hands several times a day, keep my work areas clean & tidy, use an alcohol-filled sprayer whenever I work or handle stuff, and keep bags of cultivation material closed.

IMHO, most store-bought bags of stuff, including peat, are fairly bacteria-free, many having been heat-treated already in processing.

In this biz, methinks, neatness counts -- maybe more than all the boiling and pressure cooking.

Now go wash your hands, quit mumbling & sit up straight!
