how to make a simple incubator

You need:
* 2 similar nestable bins * 4 jars * fish tank heater * something as a cover (styrofoam, blanket)
Fill one of the bins with water. Put the 4 jars and the fish tank heater in. Fill the water until just above the jars.
Put the other bin on top of the jars.
Cultures can be incubated in the top bin. Regulate the fish tank heater so that the temperature inside is suitable for the species being cultivated. Isolated the top with a styrofoam board or a blanket.

Hasn't this same design been posted about a thousand times before already?

Another no frills design thats straight up ghetto. Igloo cooler and a 20oz bottle. Turn faucet on hottest water u can get and fillup 20oz. bottle and let it sit in cooler with jars. Have to change water maybe 2x a day but its free. And you get to check jars daily for contams and such.

The problem with yours is that there is not all that much room in a styrofoam cooler. The set up that Una posted is good because of 2 reasons. 1) since the water forms a liquid wall between the plastic containers, the heat gets more evenly distributed. 2) Two really big rubbermaids are cheaper than one really big cooler, (I haven't seen too many styrofoams that are as big as a 35 gal rubbermaid. )

Well I was thinking about doing this type of incubator for a while, and today I got off my lazy ass and went to the pet shop to get a submersable heater. After being directed to them by an employee, I picked the Visi-Therm by Aquarium Systems. So I get home and take it out of the box and start reading the directions, when I see this little diagram that says this heater needs to be up-right, and there is a water line, exactly like the one's that have to clamped to a jar. This posed a problem because, as illustrated in Una's pictures, the heater needs to be in a horizontal position. So has anybody used this kind of heater successfully in the above illustrated picture? Do all "submersables" have a water lines, or do I need to get off my lazy ass again? Thanks.

I used more or less the same design as Una and find it serves it's purpose brilliantly. I have my incubater at 27c and my 50 w heater regulates the water temperature without a problem.

When i said cooler i meant a igloo that hold about 6 half pints which is what i use since i only had 6. Not knocking una's seutp its alot nicer and more maintenace free but costs some cash just thers more than one way to skin a cat

Sorry man, if you wanna make one like in the picture, you'll need to get up off yer ass again (I know, I know, it sucks) or you could fill a big ass jar with water, put the heater you have in that (the right way) and put the whole thing in your incubator. I never really got that to work out too well though.

Goddamnitshitfuckshitcocksuckershit. I really don't feel like going back, damn. I swear to god, I hate buying shit for this hobby cause I go into random stores to buy supplies and half the time the employees ask me what the supplies are for, not in an interogating way, they're just looking to help. See if growing was legal, (which it won't be, I'm just ranting) I could go into a store and explain to the employee's exactly what I need, but no, I gotta look like a dumbass, and make a lot of expensive learning mistakes. crappity crap crap.

Oh I know, it just would be easier if I could just be like "I'm building an incubator using two rubbermaids and I need a submersable that can be in a horizontal position." But hey, it wouldn't be such a cool hobby if everyone was doing it.

Yea man you can use that heater. Ir really dosent matter if its submersable or not. I took my dubbermaid and cut out a hole. I also cut off some plastic mounting hardware that was on the heater with a dremel. I unserted the heater in the hole and put jb weld around the inside of the hole to seal it. I just use the rubbermaids top that it came with and I have no clue why you used a towel instead of the top it came with?

>What are the jars for?
They are there to keep the upper bin above the heater.
For a more elaborate description of this setup (the original design was by Alien) read http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm .

There is no need to fret about questions from employees at various stores. I buy all my supplies at different stores so one person doesn't see the whole picture. Rubbermaid tubs=clothes storage Submersible heater=the old one in my aquarium just took a dump Bulk white millet and oyster shell=my sister sent me for supplies for her birds vermiculite/perlite=parents asked me to stop for garden supplies etc.,etc.
I've actually never had to answer any ?'s, since I know beforehand what I want.
No worries

So now here's the bitch of all bitches. So I decided to get a new, fully submersible heater, which was cool cause I found one for $10 less than the origional. So I go get the bitch come home and fill up one of the rubbermaids with water, AND THE BITCH HAS A LEAK, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!! God doesn't want me to have a good incubator, so I scrambled around the house looking for solutions, luckily I found some PVC cleaner& sealer. Put that shit on there and its drying as I type, I hope the PVC is like Vanilla Ice, solving my problem.
