XBOX360 E74 question

This little error on the 360 has the bottom left red light come on. I've searched around the net and found some insight into this problem, but I thought I would ask here in cause there is probably someone that has already encountered and fixed this problem? Apparently you can open the case up (which I've yet to attempt myself)and detach and clean the one heat sink, then take it out and put it back in basically. I'm a little worried about taking apart and fixing it, then having my xbox live account banned cause the unit is no longer in its original form. Any input or help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!

I just had the same problem happen to me last week, except the bottom right light comes on. I haven't tried to fix it yet either as I am afraid of messing it up.
I have also read that this problem can be related to the AV cord. That says that you can just buy a new one and the xbox will be fine.
I dont think that taking apart the xbox will get you banned from using Live. I dont see how taking it apart would change the way it works. I'm pretty sure Live just looks for people who use mods and things like that.
Although when I get some supplies I am going take it apart and clean the GPU like the video guide says. I just hope it goes ok.

Thats retarded, it will still be in its original form, the only thing they would be able to detect is software/hardware changes, but if you just pop off the heatsink and put it back on, its still the same damn thing...tell me, what thought process led you to believe this is even possible? What mechanism would they use to detect you took the thing apart, and cleaned out the heatsink to be able to ban you from xbox live?
lmao

The error, which manifests itself as a black screen with the code "E74," is thought to be caused by failing video hardware.
quoted from your link...lol, isn't the original RRoD from the video chip getting bad connection from it overheating and warping/losing a solid connection?
Seems like the same problem under a different code IMO...how better to get rid of the RRoD than to just change the behavior when the same error happens?

I thought it would set off an alarm or something cause it had been simply opened. My friend got banned from xbox live for no reason, they said he had it modified. He never moved after he put it under his t.v. lol. Im still going to open it up, I was looking at the x-clamp mod kit you can buy I might try installing that on it. Any suggestions (other than Acetone or MEK) for cleaning off the old dirty thermal goo?

Ya i guess the RRoD is the heat sink losing cohesion from the cpu. The E74 is the heat sink for the gpu losing cohesion. I think i may be oversimplifying the RRoD cause a bit. The E74 though all you do to fix it is take the gpu heat sink off(the smaller grey one of the two on the motherboard), clean off the old dirty thermal goo off the heat sink and gpu (with Akasa Tim-Clean, apparently very hard to find in North America), apply new thermal goo, reattach the heat sink, then remove the heat sink, turn on the xbox (it will give you two red lights saying its overheating), turn it off, replace the heat sink firmly, then it should be in working order once more. The x-clamp mod though claims to make RRoD impossible cause it keeps the seal better, so I'm assuming that it will keep E74 from happening in the first place as well.
