so f***in lost...help
    #10031763 - 03/24/09 09:56 AM (15 years, 9 months ago)

Ok si I've look around on here and haven't found to many answers specific to my grow, or rather my friends grow, so I decided to join and post! So my friend is having some problems trying to grow some amazons in grow bags. He's a first time grower. So here's the setup...
We bought some amazon spores from lil shop here and noc'd up three grow bags from sporeworks and two rye bags from mycopath. All five are in a plastic covered terrarium with some moist perlite in the bottom and a heating pad underneath the tank all in a cardboard box for stealth reasons. The tank usually stays between 78 and 85 degrees. The first three bags from sporeworks have been in there for about 2 n ahalf to 3 weeks with no signs of anything except one bag smells like ass so I'm pretty sure its got contam. The two from mycopath have been in about three days with no signs. So I guess my question is what am I doin wrong. Thanks for any help I can get. It would be greatly appreciated. Peace

take the bags out of terrarium with the heating pad...
it's too fucking hot in there for them.

the bags will colonize better at room temperature...
like in the low 70's.

throw away the bag that smells like ass.

You don't put your jars/bags in a moist environment while they are colonizing. You are totally mixing up colonization and fruiting stage! Go back to reading up on growing mushrooms.

Yup, you're quite lost. ditch the heating pad and just let them colonize at room temp. Start reading.

Alright looks like I mixed shit up but hey its a learning process right. Nowhere near ready to quite. Thanks for the help guys really appreciate it. Ill update as soon as shit gets rollin. So do you think the I ruined the bags or will they still colonize if I take em outta there?

Who knows?  They might colonize and they might not.  I'd say it's worth letting them sit at room temperature for a few days at least to see if they will resume growth at all rather than throwing them out right away.  Definitely toss the one that smells like ass though.

Right on. Well ill keep em in there and see how shit goes. I can't imagine the new bags bein to fucked up as they've only been in there for a little over two days but I'm sure the others were fucked a long time ago. I'm slightly confused though doesn't shit usually mold better when its in a warmer wetter environment?

yes it does, thats why we let all colonization happen between 70-78*F.  the myc when colonizing creates its own heat thus raising the temp a couple degrees, 81+ is mold and bacteria heaven.

Yes.  That is why we've all suggested that you take them out of the terrarium and let them sit out at room temperature where it is not warm and wet and ready for mold.

another thing, if you fruit in the bags, you dont even need them in any sort of fruiting chamber. THEY ARE the fruiting chamber.

 @ mold that was funny.

birthing them and spawning(adding the grains to a moist nutritious substrate such as manure) will be your most rewarding way to go, but it is also a good way to introduce new contaminations to ur grow. which we all take that risk, but it would seem you might want to dip your toes in a lil first b4 plunging into the deep end. entirely up to you though.

are the bags ur using straight grain, or is there other things in it?

Spawn to bulk.  Coir is nice.  Check out large_dose's tek for spawning to coir.  You dump a gallon of boiling water into a bucket with the coir, mix it up and let it sit until it cools.  Then mix it up with your grains and let it colonize that.  More mushrooms that way.

Read the tek for detailed instructions though.

My bags are straight rye nothin else in there. The coir idea sounds good so I'm thinkin about just spawing 1 of my bags to bulk to be safe. What's the difference in yeild gonna be if I spawn it to bulk coir like that and how hard is it gonna be to do. How easy is it to get contams that way?

strait coir is pretty hard to contaminate.

just do some more reading. or maybe use the search engine.
the coir question has come up more than enough times.

yeah, as long as you don't put them in airtight or dirty containers they are unlikely to contaminate.  Use tin foil with holes covered with micropore tape to cover them.

Here is large_dose's journal, check the ohmatic monotub and paseurizing coir teks.  For pasteurizing you do not have to boil the coir in the pot of water, you can just dump the water on top of the brick.  But if you just dump it on top you will have to mix it up so it's evenly hydrated.

thats the link that started the craze

wallyworld usually doesnt have coco coir.

hit up a nursery, or a pet store. make sure you get fibre and not husk.

the overall yield difference btwn the two is unbelievable.

thats why almost everyon that uses grain spawns to bulk

none of the cubensis need a cold shock.

once your sub if fully colonized, fruit it. you will already have the correct moisture content in it from b4 you spawned.

you wont need to dunk till after 1st flush is done

Very useful info. Thanks. I was worried bout the cold shock and the dunking as well. I've heard the amazons are quite potent does anybody have experience with these? Does anybody have a general idea of about how much spawn I can get out of spawing a 1lb rye bag with coir?

as far as i know, amazons don't have a more potent reputation; the cubensis strain varies very little in potency from strain to strain with exception to the orissa india strain.  this is all from second hand knowledge tho, not personal experience.

Hmm well I've read that the amazons were first thought to be a strain of azures cus of their strong potency. Just wondered if anybody could validate that with personal experience

An mushroom potency can very from mushroom to mushroom grown right next to each other and that's BS about being a strain of azures....

excellent point; as far as consistantly tho, i've always been told that on the whole, all cubes are relatively similar in potency.....except the orissas.  haven't found anyone disagreeing with that yet.

excellent point; as far as consistantly tho, i've always been told that on the whole, all cubes are relatively similar in potency.....except the orissas.  haven't found anyone disagreeing with that yet.

Yes you have.

ditto. PEs can be bad ass, check my sig,
but IME all cubes are pretty good.  if potency is what u want then look up cloning and isolates, doesnt matter the strain then just good tissue samples of good fruits.

Alright so my bags are colonizing still but they seem to be going a lot slower than I've heard they should. I'm wondering if this has to do with moisture cus it looks pretty dry in there. Any thoughts? Does humidity have an effect on colonization? Are there any tips out there for speeding up colonization?

no humidity doesnt effect colonization, unless you have too much moisture then your beggin for contams and prohibiting growth. your grains are not supposed to look wet anyway.  your moisture is in the grain itself.  as long as your temps are stable and you try for optimal colonizing conditions the myc is going as fast as it can.

so sit back and be patient.  if your following teks correctly its all a waiting game.

stop reposting(bumping) the same question because your not satisfied with your responses.  everyone is telling you the same thing.

just wait.:getstoned:
