PC Savvy People HELP!
    #10024557 - 03/23/09 05:39 AM (15 years, 10 days ago)

My laptop seems to be dieing. I bought it maybe 1 1/2 years ago.

It's a Toshiba. 2 x T5500 1.66Ghz and 2G RAM. Over 100GB's still free on the HD.

I use it mainly for Music Production. The problem started with a program (Abelton) started crashing and running horribly slow. I checked the list of processes and found 'WinFAH' running. After stopping that it seemed to work so I assumed that's what it was.

Anyway, the other day I started playing some music (Winamp) when It started cutting in and out and glitching hard!
Confused, I tried another sound card, thinking that may have been it. No dice.

Even with no other programs running. It's glitching. I have looked at my CPU usage, it is spiking a little, but never more than %20. Although my 'loading' light does show some sort of spike, and the music glitching is corresponding when the light is flashing.

Any idea's?

hey...          this is a shot in the dark so get yer salt ready..

i use logic.. im not familiar with abelton.  but sometimes i've heard you can change the audio accelerator (i think) / if you lower it, it can sort out sound glitches e.t.c

anyhow you could give it a try...  if it doesn't work change it back..

click start -> run    and type in dxdiag  -> then click on sound tab and then adjust audio accelerator....

good luck...

This is what i call the windows bug and its why i dont use it.

I have found on alot of machines, not only mine but many other machines that over time, it gets slow and starts crashing.

My windows installation which hardly gets used is painfuly slow.

Its possibly you have spyware or malware etc on your machine.

You should do a full scan for malware and spyware, also make sure your virus checker is update and do a full scan.

Usually when that happens, i have just found it best to start from scratch, back up everything then wipe the hard drive and reinstall fresh.

Get your virus checkker and spyware software installed right away before connecting to the internet.

The problem with windows is that its been so idiot proofed that security has been highly compromised.

Linux is secure straight out of the box and thats why i use it. Id ont even need a virus checker or spyware/malware softare :-)

Ok, so i just done a search for winfah.exe. Thats the folding home client that uses spare cpu cycles to calculate the folding of proteins. It shouldnt make a noticable difference, though i might cause some glitching here and there.

Im assuming your using an external soundcard, a firewire mbox maybe??? You could try removing and reinstalling the drivers.

Thanks guys. I checked out the audio accelerator. Says it's working fine, and it on full.

Yeah I do use an external audio card, well a few. Edirol, Profire 2626, TASCAM US-122L.
But it's happening just running my default sound card through my laptop.

I'm thinking a re-format might be in order. Should be a right pain in the ass!

I recorded some music playing, it's my build in mic rec'd with Windows Recorder, so yeah it's shitty qulaity to start with but you'll hear how bad it's glitching.

Sample

HOLY SHIT! Ok, well now my Cpu usage is showing something very different!
Here's my process window!
