contaminated bags, why?
    #10017862 - 03/22/09 01:47 AM (15 years, 10 days ago)

i have been having problems with mould contamination when using filter patch bags.

i'm using rye as spawn, and cior and poo as substrate in the bags. the last two bags i done, i tried to squeeze as much water out of the substrate as i could, because in previous bags, the water would all sink to the bottom of the bags and it would contaminate there. also, with the last two bags, they were like 99% colonised, and i got home today, to see mould.

any reasons this could be happening to me?

Failure to follow sterile procedure.  Mold is caused by mold spores, so if your substrate was proper sterilized, the mold was introduced at inoculation.

so i should be sterilizing the substrate, not just pasturizing? Why is this different from bags to trays?

Bulk substrate should be pasteurized. Grain spawn should be sterilized. There's no diff between prepping bulk substrates between bags and trays

At pasteurization temps of 140-170*F all the mold spores, mold mycelium and a good portion of malicious bacteria will be dead. The only way mold could have gotten into the bag is an opening, or your filter got wet.

Or you, as RR said, accidentally introduced mold spores during inoculation.

I would recommend using less water, or letting it drain for a longer time. Too much water will slow down colonization, allowing contaminants more time to get to your substrate. and too much water also is a breeding pool for contaminants

as i said, this was the driest i have ever made my substrate. i have done trays before, and never had problems with them.

how am i meant to mix the spawn in with the bulk substrate withought introducing contaminates (withought using a flowhood)?

Mm.. a still air box will work. Also closely inspecting your spawn bags beforehand. Gloves sanitized with alcohol and quick work. Don't leave the bag open too long.

Only leave it open long enough to put the spawn in, and then close it again, and mix it up by massaging

it's hard enough to work with jars in a still air box. there is no way i would try and fuck around with a container of bulk substrate and bags in one.

how do other paople do this?
