shroom growing on shroom?
    #1002608 - 10/29/02 08:56 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Well, my first PF cake started pinning about 4 or 5 days ago. it is growing really fast. there were 2 on the side of the cake i have been watching, and this morning i looked at it, and it seems as though the slightly smaller one is only attached tot he top of theother one. they have brown heads and everything, so i think it's kinda odd that one would grow off the other. i'm not sure if somehow it detached, maybe by getting bumped. or if it grew like that. should I leave it be? or try to take off the top one? is this normal?

My second analysis of the situation suggests that the upper mushroom was torn off of the cake from rapid growth of the lower one, and somehow it is perched on the cap still, completely unattached to the cake. That is of course just my hypothesis.

I have witnessed this phenomina my self. In my case a single immature mushroom spawned clusters of pins off of it's cap. It was the oddest thing, and I have yet to reproduce this effect.

I am just wondering, and this may sound odd, but here goes... It is my understanding that when you pick a mushroom off of a cake, or any mycelium network for that matter, it goes into dormancy until the next flush. my question is, if the mushroom did in fact get pulled off the cake from the other's growth (as opposed to it actually growing on the cap of the mushroom, thought i think the former is more likely), will that put my cake into dormancy now?

no, you may want to go ahead and do some reading. Get a better understanding of the mycelial life cycle. but no.
