For my six quarts:
1 qt. spawn 2 qts. coir 1 qt. spent coffee (or more coir, or verm or whatever) 1/2 pint gypsum 3" depth

16 qt dub tubs:
3 qts spawn 6 quarts substrate 1 pint gypsum 3.5" depth
And since we're on the topic, and a couple other guys I mentioned it to in another thread thought it was a good idea:
Tip: In my experience 1 inch of a brick of Eco-Earth coir = 1 quart of substrate. Score it on both sides with a razor, and snap it off.
Other tip: Also, since I've only ever used weird tub sizes, I started just filling my tubs a quart at a time with water until I reach a desirable sub depth... it works well with coir... my Hpoo tub was a little shy cause I didn't pack the poo in my quarts very well.
Third tip: Use a metal closet hanger bar to to make your 'FAE' holes in your tubs. Heat them up and poke em through (use a pot holder). Then, when it's time to dunk, you reinsert them to keep your sub from floating... They're like $1 a foot a home depot, cut with hacksaw or sawzall.

search bar.... "bulk sub calculator"
why do a thread when that is far better... dial in the measurements.. depth desired and magically u have an answer amazing how the search bar works
-------------------- I agree totally. However, this forum isn't for the experienced growers, because they already know the ropes. It's for the new growers who are just starting out. Sometimes the hardest part about learning something new is un-learning bad info. That's why I tend to correct people for calling a substrate tray a 'casing', etc.

The calculator is bad ass, but it doesn't mention moisture content or different 'blends' of sub... And though the topic in general is probably beaten to death with a couple searches, it's better to talk about tubs & subs than all the 23% colonized PF cake threads.

Because the calculator can't contribute valuable information and tips that have already been shown in this thread!
Please keep your measurements and tips coming!

its not as if the help a noob thread hasn't been made before do a search andu will find em this thread is gonna be like many others that get lost til someone happens across it and makes a comment then it'll help a few people... good idea but yeah that search bar has far more than a single thread. u want a sub amount use the calculator. not sure what to use? hmm coir as simple as it gets. mixes? whatever u wanna try will work as long as its a proven sub "use the search" if its a question like "what can I use as a bulk sub" then that person is lazyyyyyy... hell when u make a post this wonderful site throws multiple similar posts that most of the time have the anwers... horse or cow poo. coir. cob. hay. coffee grounds. ect ect look read learn ... don't get me wrong I enjoy reading what others are doin but aiming this post at helping noobs is lame. I'm a noob to bulk with only a couple grows under my belt and one was a so fucked up mess but got lucky... I just don't see this post sticking strong hell I've been negative at it but that's what's bumped it back up just as much as others...
anyways not trying to be a bitch sorry if I offend but yeah happens...
positive feedback measure ur tub and use the calculator. I plan to spawn 2.5 qts to 9 qts of a mix of 50% cob 40% coir and 10% earthgro in a week or so.. I have 10 1 pints topped off and colonizing and 6 are about ready to go so measured my 11 gallon tub used that wonderful calculator "3 inch deep sub desired " and bam got my numbers gonna use 5 pints so I can do 2 of the tubs as soon as the rest catch up... cob kicks asssss

Sorry to bump an old thread.
This thread is AWESOME though, exactly what I was looking for. Hopefully this bump will get the attention of somebody that can fill in the blanks, or add more to it.
Thanks for making this thread man.

a whole brick of coir for that one?
How much do you have left over?
I fit 9 quarts of material in my 16qt tubs for a depth of 3-3 1/2 inch sub.. A brick alone is 8 qts...

I like my sub dryer and I use the coffee ground in the water that I pasterize the coir in, if that makes a difference. I only get 6 1/2-7 quarts from a brick. Works evey time and fruits fast. CH
