If you have access to a PC grains are definitely the way to go. Inoculate 12 quart jars spawn 11.5 jars to bulk use the other half to do a g2g to 11 new jars of grains
you can do this roughly 3-4 times before noticing debilitating effects
Rye berries are referred to as the best but aren't available in all areas. WBS works for me and is dirt cheap-$10 for a 40# bag.

PC=pressure cooker WBS=wild bird seed (the cheaper the better-look at ingredient list for any anti-fungal additives) G2G=grain to grain, spoonful (or more) of already colonized grains added to sterilized grains (PC'ed and cooled)
do a search for WBS TEK, G2G TEK

WBS tek-don't have to remove sunflower seeds even though this tek says to, they will actually help speed up colonization.
6T (agar) wbs tek with pics and reference to g2g
bulk sub pastuerization
Mono tub tek
That should give you some reading material until tomorrow, just post any other ????s you come up with.

The only reason why sunflower seeds seem to colonize fast is because of their large size. Less surface area to colonize = faster colonization = less mycelium in the jar. Also they retain moisture poorly. I never use them.
Try a mixture of WBS and whole brown rice. 50/50 of both. Remove all floaters from the WBS, mix with WBR, prepare like normal WBS. Add a pinch of gypsum to each jar.
When they are colonized spawn them to coir, verm & coffee.

My suggestion would be make some more cakes up PF style since you have a good understanding of what you are doing and then crumble them and mix w/ some Coir and try some trays out. Better yields then a cake alone, and an extra step for you to get familiar with and learn.
