Hardiness zones for cubensis?
    #10014268 - 03/21/09 02:16 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I was wondering if anyone knew the limit for hardiness zones of cubensis if one was looking to start an outdoor patch.  I have a few jars I'd like to toss outside since they contaminated with bacteria I believe (they all stopped growing in a tiny spot), but I'm not sure if it would be worth it to try.  I'll probably give it a shot anyway, but I was wondering if anyone had the specific zones they are known to thrive.

I am in the same zone,  if your still getting frost its OK just throw a tarp over the area they were planted until it warms a little more.

Not getting frost really, but still quite chilly.  I probably wouldn't plant them out for another couple weeks, when it'll hopefully warm up.  I just wasn't sure if once planted the conditions would be sufficient for growth, since I haven't seen many (any) growlogs of northeast cube beds.

Nah man don't wait,  if the ground isn't frozen then throw them in the ground.  Bury what ever you got cover with about an inch of soil and cover with a tarp,  on the warm days it will get the myc network set up then when it warms up uncover and if your lucky you will get some nice outdoor shrooms.  Even if you wait a few weeks you still wont have fruit bodies out side for a while.

You can grow them in the summer all the way to the arctic.  They won't survive the winter outside their natural habitat, which is semi-tropical areas.  The 'zone' system relates to minimum winter temperature and isn't really related to fungi.

I've actually been thinking.  Given my climate and situation, do you think it would be better to do what I've stated above, or just take the lids off the jars and case and fruit them invitro?  I'm not sure which would be the better option, what do you think?

Sorry for adding on an irrelevant question, but I figured it was better than starting a new topic.

I would throw them outdoors, it'll free up room and jars, and if it ever fruits you'll be much more surprised and excited

good luck!

Ok, I'm about to throw these guys outside, but one question - should I just crumble them in a hole and cover with dirt, or should I spawn them to a substrate?  Another question - would cactus soil work as an outdoor spawn substrate?  (Aka sphagnum peat moss, "natural forest products" whatever that means, and perlite)

Thanks in advance.

Any opinions?  I really don't want to make a new thread for this.

Toss them in the garden or flowerbed area where you've used manure as fertilizer.  They'll consume the manure and make it available for the plants.  They won't survive winter.  You'll need to toss more spent/contaminated substrates outside each spring/summer.
