I'm new to forums, is it wrong to be on a thread and ask someone to look at a question you posted? (in the same "mushroom cultivation forum")

Good to know. I have to say, for a first time grow, this seems to be very well executed. Way better than my first pathetic attempt at a poorly mixed PF cake in a shitty aquarium!
Nice layout too. You did your research, and it shows.
Here's to a good harvest!

hehe yeah they are pretty cute thanks for the comment ^^
It's just too bad they're not as big as I was hoping probably due to not enough substrate, next time I'll add much more.
Also thanks Davinici ^^ I have spent alot of time reading up on everything, I thought I was doing it all right but luckily with this first grow I've found all my mistakes and errors ^^
So things to remember:
1.) Make your substrate thick when doing a casing.
2.) Mist and mist if your casing looks dry, it should always look moist. If there are pins or fruits growing point the spray bottle upwards so the mist falls lightly on the mushies.
3.) Lots of FAE and fan everywhere equally, if you don't you'll have blue bruising mushies like mine ; ;
4.) I've got my Coco coir on the way and I'm going to birth my cakes to a mixture of coco coir/coffee/vermiculite next time with maybe a 50/50 Jiffy mix with vermiculite casing, still can't decide.

yeah coco coir is a pretty easy medium to work with. easy to get, pretty cheap and very clean in the preparation. if you haven't found that one yet http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9289857#9289857 this is a very nice pictorial for coir bulk substrate.
50/50 peat/verm casings with gypsum and hydrated lime have worked pretty well for me so far but many fellow growers swear on not casing and using wax-paper to introduce pinning instead. maybe you should do two similar bulks with and without casing to find out for yourself what you prefer.
I mean adding a casing is a bit of a hassle, you need the ingredients, need to mix them and pasteurise it so if there are not that many benefits why do all that.
I didn't draw that conclusion myself yet but I'm experimenting so when I get results I'll let you know. The question is what works best for you.
Keep us posted with the next projects of yours. Really good work so far.

casing is the shit. check this thread, especially his pictures from the 3/19 update....
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9952832#9952832
So yeah, casing is recommended if you are on the level.

Poor humidity in your FC was the culprit here, not the lack of casing. Granted, a casing will help you achieve good results with suboptimal humidity, but it isn't a silver bullet for higher yields. You can tell that your humidity was too low because the uncased substrate only pinned on the sides, where the proximity to the edge of the pan kept your substrate from drying out.
from the same thread. so this experiment might not be very representative.
don't get me wrong. I'm actually a friend of casing but if you have an optimal environment you might not need it.

Update again on first page! Check it out ^^ more pictures included.
DaVinci and Roggen_Rocker thank you so much for your help and your comments ^^
I have done a ton of reading on casings already and even though people say it wont help the yield of mushies I'm still going to use one for now I believe.
Unfortunately at the moment I don't have enough money to do a experiment for a bulk grow with a casing and one with no casing and just wax paper on top, but hopefully soon I can do something like that ^^

Another update on the first post with dry weight of my first flush from my 'unknown' casing and a wet weight on my first flush of my first tray of GT's.

Hahaha yeah ; ; These look amazing compared to those tiny ones... although the person I tested them out on tripped hard off of 1.5 grams dry. So after I saw that, those tiny ones weren't so bad anymore
Actually after putting those coffee grounds on my unknown casing the pins that are growing now are super huge and fat.. I'll update that casing tomorrow.
