back to the beginning,

grow tobacco and sell it, all the tobacco farmers around here (kentucky) are making a killing off of tobacco selling it to the tobacco companies (not sure how it works outside usa tho), most of them are swimming in cash.

Don't Orchids take an ass load of time to grow? Plus you need to know how to make Agar properly and have the equipment to make sterile cultures with if you plan to grow Orchids from seed. Orchids can get fairly involved.

yea but thats why you get lots of money for them. if its easy to grow and anyone can do it, then typically the prices would be alot lower.

yes, raising orchids is not something that is going to turn a quick buck. sounds like a 3-5 year plan to me.

Good point a friend of mine has tomatoes that his family brought over from Italy. They have to be some of the strangest tomatoes I have ever seen kind of heart shaped (got no pictures at the moment). I should ask him for some seeds again I didn't do a very good job tending them last time.

most plant crops take at least 3 years to establish, even annuals.  dealing with disease resistance, best cultivars, environmental conditions, light, soils etc etc (hundred s of variables), it generally takes at least 3 years (and that is with supreme research and record keeping) to get your crops on a high producing/stable level.

OP, if your in a time crunch, i would suggest mushroom culture.  they have pretty quick turn around, and are far cheaper to setup than a hydro system.  also don't really need lights so long as there is a window....depends on your setup.  i did rieshi a while ago, but never got serious into it.  made about 1000 a month with just a small scale setup though, investment was only around $2000.

Would I not need a load of space for that? All I have is a little back garden with a little greenhouse and a shed.

Now thats a good idea. My country doesn't get much light and its always humid. I have a bit of experience with mycology too. What are the best mushrooms to grow if your trying to make a profit? I hear Portobellos are easy to grow and theres always a demand for them.
