If you just sit for a while and wait until a few non sensical syllables pop into your head you can use them as your mantra. I dont think the actual mantra is all that important. Just holding your focus on it is what matters. Dont expect anything either, just focus on the mantra.

i think the point of mantras are to have a one focus concentration. so watching your breath is like the same thing, but another technique, whatever

Shingon Mikkyo - a japanese form of tantric buddhism - has as its base the simultaneous practice of mantra, mudra and mandala.
mantra can be spoken or chanted out loud or silently - occupying the voice
mudra means pose, most often referring to certain hand symbols (joining thumb and forefinger while keeping the other fingers straight is the most common, but there are many many more) - occupying the body and hands
mandala are the intricate circular designs most often associated with tibetan buddhists, these are used as objects of visualisation - just looking at them in the beginning, but later learning to build and hold (and enter) the mandala in the mind - mandala occupies the visual aspect of the mind/imagination.

I've never practiced mikkyo but I can see how this is good stuff, mantra, mudra and mandala, keeping all the thinking moving hearing imagining parts of the mind and body focused.

while mantra is an object of concentration, all traditional practitioners of mantra seem to talk about the power of certain sounds to bring about certain effects in the mind and body - altering perception through sound.

I suggest plain pure observation of the breath without trying to change it. just guard the entrance to your nostrils with your mind, carefully watching every breath as it comes in, as it goes out, notice short breaths long breaths deep breaths shallow breaths, notice the short pause in between in and out. try to keep focused, when your mind wanders gently bring it back.

when you learn a mantra from a teacher, try practicing that if you like!
