Top layer of vermiculite?
    #1001274 - 10/28/02 11:08 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Hey, my friend needs a little bit more vermiculite, but is quite lazy, and is wondering if the top layer of vermiculite that is usually in the jars can be replaced with something else, like cotton maybe. Any ideas?

I wouldn't use cotton, shit if you can't get verm, try buying those red clay pots and breaking them up into small pieces. I think that would work better than cotton. And by small, I mean verm small. Just an idea. Ok, I'm braced and ready for the shit everyone's gonna give me.

To keep out cantams. It isn't even 100% necessary, but highly recommended when using PFTek.

Rice will contaminate because it too rich in nutrients.
A casing layer must not have any nutrients.
It's only function is hydrating the substrate, and as a barrier for contamination.
Try the cotton balls and tell us how it works.
