Agar art project
    #10003682 -

Hello,

I know very little about growing molds. I heard from someone that i should buy agar from the nature food store and that molds grow on it like crazy. I am a photographer based in amsterdam working on my new project called modern artifacts. In one of the pictures i want a modern sneaker to be overgrown by molds. I made 1/4 a liter of agar (well, 7 grams of seaweed agar and about 300ml of water) cooked it, and poored it all over the shoe. It's in  a crate now in my atic. Ive been looking online to find a anwser to my question what will happen. All the agar growths i could find information about are in sealed perti dishes. I could not find what would happen fully exposed to it's surroundings, and if this could be in any way dangerous or maybe contaminent (i dont want my atic to be covered in mold). I hope someone could give me adivse about my experiment.

Also i am looking for 'good looking' molds. Molds purely for the esthetics. Are there elements that i could add to the agar that would give a colored mold, or maybe a interesting one.
I hope someone could tell me more about my contamination project.

Thanks

I would keep it somewhere where it wouldn't potentially cause damage to your house.

Pin molds would look cool because they have a thin stalk and a tiny black head. Or penicillium which is blue/green, or trichoderma which is green.

Also have you considered inoculating it with mushroom mycelium?

If you put some colonized substrate inside of the shoe, the mushrooms would find their way to fruit out of the walls of the shoe, which would have a mysterious effect

Maybe if you want a pattern, you can take an old and dusty cotton swab and swipe it across certain areas

Keep it isolated so it wont destroy your house. Perhaps you should keep it in a plastic bag in a plastic box. Moisture and still air is what molds like. When you do take photographs, wear a surgical mask. and DON'T open it inside. Go outside to do the photos, otherwise you'll release spores everywhere

Also, I think adding some honey will help the molds colonize

If you want the same type of mold to cover the shoe, then do the following:

>Take a bunch of petri dishes, and swab them with various samples from corners of your house, especially damp corners or moldy bread. Take a bunch of samples from your bathroom walls.
>Isolate your preferred mold by swabbing it from the culture and then on the shoe
>put the shoe in a plastic box and keep it well away from your living area, outside is probably best. Make sure it is damp in there; throw in a couple of wet paper towels.

Oh, and dont forget to show us some of your pics, they are probably going to look cool :super:

This sounds like a bad idea. Making something that large covered in an un-identified mold that will be pouring spores into its environment sounds like a health risk. You can't ID molds down to an exact species just by looking at it. You'll need a microscope and knowledge of mold identification.

Extremely large amounts of pin mold (Mucor species) spores is known to take hold and attack nasal passages with horrible consequences. i.e. Having to remove half your face to survive.

You'd be better off trying to grow a mushroom mycelium on the shoe. Oyster mushroom mycelium comes to mind.

You might want to do a nutrient to your agar. Plain agar and water is called starved agar. You'll want to add some malt extract or a small amount of flour to your agar.

It would be more fun to inoculate a sneaker with real mushroom mycelium and grow mushrooms.  Sort of like this hat.

The prettiest molds are also the most toxic.  I can't recommend you grow them on purpose due to the health hazzards.  If you want mushrooms on a shoe for a picture, you could follow the brf tek by stuffing the brf into the shoe and then colonizing it in a plastic bag or similar.

Thank you for all the advise!!

A few additional questions.
-I know someone who grows Oester (oyster) zwammen in holland professionaly. I'm trying to contact him if it is possible to get some spores from him. But if i cant reach him, where would i get spores from, living in holland? garden centres?

-Also, if i cultivate oyster mushrooms in a plastic garbage bag in my atic, could i open the bag outside, and than take the shoe inside to shoot it (seeming im shooting the project in the studio!)?

-How long does it take to grow oyster shrooms? are there any fast growing shrooms?

Thanks again

This is a page from one of the shroomery European vendors http://www.magicmushrooms.org/shop/hypsizygus-ulmarius-oyster-spore-syringe-p-542.html for oyster spores.

Follow this and your oysters will grow pretty quickly. Make a few cakes and stuff them inside of the shoe when you are past the "dunking" stage

Oyster mushrooms are probably the fastest growing mushrooms from inoculation to fruiting.  If your friend has oyster spawn, get that instead of spores.  It will be much faster.  In fact, tell him you want to grow mushrooms in an old shoe, and he'll probably give you what you need.  You'll want to boil the shoe in water to kill off the molds, and then fill it up with the sawdust spawn he gives you.  Keep it loosely wrapped in plastic until fully colonized, and then set it outside in a shady spot, especially if it's the rainy season, which I'm pretty sure it is in Holland.

Here's an art project for ya!
