Do I have straw or Hay?
    #1000390 - 10/28/02 03:23 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

This is the best pic of straw I could find.
What I have doesnt really look like this, it is MUCH more a golden color.
And thicker. The pecies also have reminets of some kind of grain bearing plant on 'em.
I read hay is greenish. Not golden, like what I have.

In either case, I got contam from god knows what. And I want to know if what I have is what caused it.

It's hard to tell from that pic but it goes something like this. Straw is the stem from grain bearing grasses like oat, wheat, rice, etc. Straw is used for bedding only and not for feed because of the lack of nurtrative value for ruminants (critters that graze). Hay is what they feed ruminants and can be made up of many different plants. The two most popular hay types that you will usually find are grass hay and alfalfa hay. Hay is composed of the whole damn plant and not just stems. You will see dried blades of grass, stems, and leaves of variouse plants within a hay bale. I hope that helps.

Hay is a greenish color. Straw is a golden yellow with thick stalks. It's hard to tell what that pic is.

Well, its deff straw than.
It is golden yellow w/ thick stalks.
How long should I soak it for? Maybe I did it for too long or too short.
I even over-pasturized it, put it in the oven for an hour @ 350F

I pasteurize straw in 170F water for about an hour. There is no need to soak it any more than this.
