Pasteurizing Casing Layer
    #9997552 - 03/18/09 08:27 PM (15 years, 13 days ago)

So for my casing layer i just followed RRs casing recipe from his video. But the only difference is he loaded his casing material into jars and then heated it to 160 degrees for 1 hour. I dont have any jars with me at the moment and i have a pressure cooker full of my casing material.

I was wondering if i could just pastureize it at 160 for an hour directly in the pot, i know this way i would lose some moisture so i compensated. I doing pretty much how i did my coir. Will this work?

Well for pasting casing layers, my friend prefers to just lay out all his 50/50 in his case, out on a tray with aluminum foil. Make sure it's at a little above field capacity, cover with another sheet of foil and toss it in the oven at 200 with a thermometer sticking in. to around 160

If you have heat proof bags, they would work out great.

u could sterilize a casing layer, u dont need anyhting out of a casing layers except the "micro climate" it creates.  no nutes, bacteria or anything like that, u just need it to hold moisture so u can cook it up however u want

Thats not entirely correct. There is beneficial bacteria in casing layers. they are beneficial in the sense that they make it hard for mold spores to germinate and grow. Sterilizing kills those bacteria leaving you with higher contam rates.

I use to use oven bags to do bulk substrates in a PC, it worked great. Just be sure to have some sort of vent so the bag dont bust open from the steam.

You can load it into ziploc bags and boil.  We make omelets that way.
