Psilocybe baeocystis cultivation
    #1000117 - 10/28/02 03:29 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Does anyone have any information on cultivation of Ps. Baeocystis? I recently have discovered a patch and after finding specimens with thick stalks I began considering attempting to take some tissue and clone it, either onto agar or possibly birdseed. However I do not know if those would work. I have found this thread on it, and Workman talks of using a dung substrate and agar. However I would like to avoid the agar if at all possible due to me not having access to a hood or glovebox or petris. Any tips?

Workmans thread:

thanks.

I did not find the notes on sporeworks site, perhaps they are not linked to. In any event I have PM'd workman, I hope someone can help me out with where to get started on this. I am considering just winging it today by getting a piece of stalk from a specimen and putting this to sterilized birdseed. Who knows I guess.

You need to find a copy of Steven Pollocks Mushroom cultivation book (OP). It has methods for P. baeocystis and most cold weather species.

Awesome mjshroomer, thanks, I was hoping you'd post in here, I know you are quite familiar with baeos. I will pick up that book asap.

In the meantime, I have crudely attempted to take a tissue sample from a stem of a thick ps. baeo and hopefully have this colonize a pint of birdseed. I am not confident this is going to work, I just figured it was worth a lark. Not like it cost me much.

i'm not sure of the growing parameters of baeo's but i think your best chance is to gather some sutitable substrate and then dig up some mycelium from the spot you picked them and use that to colonize your substrate.

cheers

Remarkably, today I saw some small pieces of mycelium beginning to reach out from the stem to the birdseed, one small kernel has become engulfed by it.

I am incubating the birdseed in with cubensis cultures, but I am not positive of the exact temperature of the incubator.

I am very excited about this

I can't remember where I read this but it may have been FF
Get some birch from the pet shop and simmer about an hour or until the wood settles to the bottom of the pan.
Drain well and add some sort of carbohtydrate source.
pc for a coouple hours.
When cool you can innoculate with spawn made from any type of grain.
Mix it well and let incubate in a warm place.
I think this time of year is right for woodlovers in the Pacific Northwest.
Someone at FF had a nice picture of cyans using something like this. Good luck.

This mushroom is doing really well on eucalypta mulch here in Australia.

A clone to peroxidated agar or peroxidated grain may be helpful if you have contam troubles. Also, try running it through a small test tube of sterile sawdust. If there are any contams, they would probably be left far behind the mycelium. Innoculate the tube at the bottom, fill with dust, and the first growth to reach the top will probably be clean from contams...

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Remarkably, I am not having contam troubles.

My cloning process was also very rough and rude, I picked the specimens on the way to class, kept them in a dirty paper bag in my pocket through 2 lectures and a rough ride home, and then peeled the stem and selected a tiny piece from inside and dropped it into the jar of grain in fromt of oven.

My thought that there was mycelium growing before was perhaps wishful thinking, but now there is definitely mycelium growing throughout the top layer of the jar in several places.

I cannot believe my good luck, I never expected this to work, and now things are actually happening.  I do not have the financial means to get myself the book mjshroomer mentioned, and I am wondering if anyone who does own it could tell me the correct incubating temperature for Ps. Baeocystis?

Thanks for all the suggestions, when the time comes I am going to weigh my options (and wallet) and see what I can grow these out on.

edited to say : that is a really good idea about the test tube, it makes me want to try it, but I am fortunate  I dont have to

Peroxidated grain is simply grain which has been treated with dilute peroxide to protect it from contaminate spores (or any spore for that matter, desirable or contam) while still allowing mycelium to colonize it. Search for peroxid and grain or peroxidated grain is a term I've used often when discussing it. If you come up shorthanded after searching or just want some more clarification PM me and I'll go over it with you.

BTW, wtg without getting contams, that's pretty rare with wild specimens IME.

Again im incubating baeos in the same temps as cyans and azures and they are colonising fine - temps should probably be low, but its hot here and they are all going well.

Thank you, I will have to do that up, I've had it in the same incubator as my cubensis cultures, I think today I will shake the jar and put it back in there, and see just how fast it goes then, and once I have a full pint colo'd (it seems to be doing something at cubensis temps) I will spawn several other jars and find out which one grows the best (given a range of temperatures over each jar, some cubensis temps, some outdoor, some on the floor in a bag) I'll get a real range and see what these puppies like.

the baeos I have found on alder chips pop up after the cyans have been in the patch for 2 years or so. so very fresh chips might not be best, but more composted wood should work. this is not your typical woodlover, more like stuntzii in that they prefer more degraded wood substrates. when on wood, I notice that the mycelium never produvces the thick mycelial mats, as does cyans and azures, but is much whispier and doesnt seem to penetrate the chips as thoroughly. this shroonm grows thick beautiful and large on these chips, while being smaller and more delicate when found in pasture land. match substrate to the strain. sounds like you are having excellent luck, I also use the oven tek for all procedures. I set it on self clean, wait for it to finish, then just set it on warm. I love my oven.
