Anyone know how many BTU's it would take to heat up a 55 gallon drum for a past. bath?

~73370 BTUs is a really rough estimate.

raise the barrel up on cinder blocks, and build a wood fire under it.

depends well insulated the drum is and how fast you want it up to temp, ambient temp, a bunch of other things.

I'd say the min burner output you'd want to work with is about 100,000 BTU.  Even a burner that size is going to take its sweet ass time heating 50 gallons of water. I've used a 60,000 BTU burner to boil 20 gallons of water, it took about an hour and a half. Bring something to read.

ive researched the same thing and was told by a immersion heater manufacturer that you would need a 5000watt immersion heater/heating element...the problem is they run on 220 volts and i have 110.

i have seen small water heaters for apartments and such that run on 110 and heat up to 160f.

also ive been thinkin about using the burner from a turkey fryer.Maybe prop up the drum and put the fryer under it.

building a fire would work outdoors only, sometimes not an option.

yeah if you have a 220V outlet (dryer hookup)then a larger heating element would be a good way to go. There's no way you'd be able to heat that much water with something like the 1400W elements that run on a 110V GFI.  I think you're better off with gas.

you realize that when this drum is loaded it's going to be pushing 500lbs right? I kind of doubt this is worth the hassle.
