Espresso machines
    #9992875 - 03/18/09 01:17 AM (15 years, 14 days ago)

so espresso machines are ungodly expensive for the ones that actually work, and make a good drinkable product.

so i was wondering if anyone knew of a way to build one.  my understanding is all an espresso machine is, is a boiler with a high pressure pump.  and all it really does is extract using high temp water running through compacted coffee grinds.

SO, it would seem to me that this could be achieved in a much similar way...for example using a pressure cooker :smilingpuppy:

seeing as how a pressure cooker gets up to 15psi, i assume thats as good or better than the pumps in an expresso machine as far as pressure is concerned.

now i realize were talking about a water pump vs steam.  but i have an idea for that, run a T pipe where the air release usually is.  one end goes straight up in the air, and has a place for the psi rocker to sit on.  the other, goes down to a box thats filled with 2 shot cups worth of water, then it continues to a valve.  then farther down to another box for the tampered coffee grinds, and then and exit tube

so as the pressure cooker gets up to 15psi, the water inside the box should heat up, one could install a thermomiter to see the exact temp.  anyways when the water gets up to the right temp, and you have enough pressure you open the valve, the steam pushes the water through the coffee grinds.  and poof espresso?

i dunno maybe this is a retarded idea, i was looking to buy an espresso machine yesterday and while looking i realized they are "stupidly" expensive.  there's no reason on gods green earth a little box of stainless steel should cost over 2k.  and i seen the cheaper ones, i thought about a $100-200 but i just don't want to buy one, and later find out it was a waste of money and have to buy another.

anyways let me know the flaws of my idea, and share some of your ideas.  and i guess any suggestions for a good espresso machine i could buy.  but the reviews ive been reading, it just seems like its hard to get one at a decent price

I used to work at a coffee chop for over two years. I bought one for about 100 dollars. The problem with the cheaper ones is that they don't have enough pressure "extraction power".

So you go through twice as many beans. So I use four "shots" in each drink instead of two cuz they're diluted. Then I add the cream, chocolate, and milk. It tastes almost exactly the same. If you think about it. It's like a regular mocha with two shots of milk being replaced by two shots of water. Get it?

thats awesome, i just wish it showed how to build it :frown:

but by doing 4 weak shots, you miss out on the crema at the end of the pull don't you?  and then with the cheaper machines you can't get microfoam from what im reading.  and honestly i don't really know what all that means, but i assume it all equals out to be lesser quality without it, and if im gunna do this i want something worthy.

the starbucks in town went out of buisness so i need to find a worthy replacement :frown:  so i was hoping for something as good or better, as i assume a starbucks would reuse coffee grinds or cheap out in other places to save money if they could

You're mostly right. The crema is the "meat" of the shot and it is dispersed throughout the duration of the shot, with the most coming out after  a few seconds of the hot water running through it. and tapering down to almost nothing by the end. I like your idea. It reminds me of one of those cartoon devices you see with 10 devices going through their motions and producing a good espresso shot at the end. lol. I hope you can do it, but it'll be a bit of work. Also, I get crema from mine, but only about half as much as an espresso machine from starbuck's. I was working with espresso machines that cost about 12,000 dollars the last time I touched one. God, that's a small car!

I'm much more of a coffee fan than espresso, but I bought one on sale for about $65.  Seems to work well and have lots of foam.

How do they rate these?  by PSI?  They 15 PSI ones at target for about $100.  maybe you want more than that *shrug*

I think they measure it in bars as far as pressure, and it might be 120 psi, not sure, because you're forcing really hot water through grounds that are VERY tightly packed together as far as granule size. You don't press hard, but the particles are SO small.

dam i think 120psi is right but it just doesn't make sense.  if a all american can only handle 20psi how do these cheap little pieces of plastic handle it all?

anyways i went out and bought a cheap espresso machine for like $50 and it said 15 bar on it.  thing is, it heated up and brewed the coffee in less than 3 mins.  and yah i was disappointed as i expected and returned it already.  all it was, was really strong coffee, which i could make in my drip coffee maker already lol  so ill prolly end up buying a 700 dollar machine since my pressure cooker idea won't work

Well, the deal here is, there are two types of cheap espresso machines, the ones that make like 4 ounces of concentrated coffee, and the ones that make about 2 ounces. You got the first. You WANT the second one, but You'll have to do what I said I do with mine, I throw double the shots to compensate. It tastes just like the stuff from the coffee shop. Give it a shot. You'll like it. I'll have to get the brand.
