Can crushed eggshells be used as sub. for Hydrated Lime?
    #9976629 - 03/15/09 02:45 PM (15 years, 17 days ago)

I have a question that would be great if someone could help me clear up.

When I case my substrate, I am going to use the 50/50 + tek (peat moss/verm). Do I need to adjust the ph for it?

Instead of using hydrated lime (which I cannot find anywhere around where I live) can I just use some finely ground egg shells? Also....would it be okay if I don't use the crushed oyster shells in my casing mixture? I can't seem to find them either.

And since I am using a coir/verm/coffee/wormvcasting/gypsum (3:1:1:1:0.5) for a bulk substrate I don't need to add any ph adjuster (buffer) to that right?

Do you think that is a good recipe for the  bulk sub?

Any thoughts or help on this would be greatly appriciated.

Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime can be found at most grocery stores.

You can also skip this and use a store bought 'casing material'. If you run to Home Depot you will find Jiff Mix Seed Starting Mix. Evidently it's already ph adjusted, contains peat, and verm. I picked up all they had for like $3.00 per 10qt bag.

well...i already have the materials to make the casing....i just really want to know if i can use finely crushed egg shells as a substitute for hydrated lime (bc the active ingredient in h.l. is calcium carbonate....which is what egg shells are made of).

is this possible?

No, you can't.  Crushed egg shells would take at least six months to have an effect on pH, and you need it right away.  Hydrated lime is water soluble so it goes to work immediately.

However, the point is moot if you're growing cubensis.  It doesn't need a casing layer with bulk substrates.  Just make your bulk substrate, pasteurize it properly, and at full colonization, expose to fruiting conditions uncased.
