What's this called again????????
    #994990 - 10/26/02 03:56 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Whats it called again when you take a colonized piece of subtrate and stick it in an uncolonized jar??? I was wondering if anyone has a URL link, or just the name of this procedure so I can look into it more, thanks

You could call it spawning
It's also similar to a grain-to-grain transfer

Usually this refers to a "grain to grain transfer," which is a form of innoculation.

Purity of the original substrate (if the first jar is contaminated or weak, you pass on that contam/weakness exponentially to subsequent generations of spawn), and STERILE technique are paramount when using this technique; otherwise it is a good way to go bulk.

Well, I found 2 colonised BRF jars that I forgot about 7weeks ago. You can see that the cakes inside are shrunk a bit due to lower moisture, but I still think it's strong.
I want to take a chunks of cake from this jar, and stick them into some Grain jars, do u think its worth the try?

It'll work, as long as the cake itself isnt too badly dehydrated... but there still is a chance for contamination...

How big a chunk of cake needs to be inserted into the new jar for spawning?

Number of chunks is more important than size.
You have to be incredibly sterile doing this, every time I've opened a jar of uncolonised grain it's gotten contaminated. Try doing it in the shower straight after you've had a shower. Use as many small bits as possible, dunk them in 1:10 H2O2 first.

Agar to grain
Grain to grain transfer
Spawning bulk substrate .
There are many terms , it depends on method you follow , and what stage of transfers you are in .
Good Luck

Each of my Birdseed (Grain) jars are going to get a few pieces of BRF colonized cake. I dont know if the pieces have to be a certain size, but Ill just stick 3-4 quarter inch pieces per grain jar and see how that goes. Any other suggestions are welcome.

i've seen it done just taking the most rhizo tufts with a sterile knife tip from one grain jar and dropping it into another uncolonized grain jar on a rack in front of the oven (oven tek or whatever). no contams seen yet.
