Mushroom ID : I saw someone picking these to eat!
    #9941578 - 03/09/09 06:49 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

These are growing in pine needles on a hill in San Francisco. The caps are between 3 and 4 inches round, flat at the edge growing thicker at the middle. Stem is about 2 inches long with a 3/4" diameter and solid.

As you can see by the photo, there are orangeish tan pores and the spore print is tan.

I don't notice any bruising color, the flesh of the mushroom is pale yellow.

As a first time poster, any ID much appreciated.

It is a Suillus species, possibly S. granulatus!
What is the taste like?

Yes it is edible, I don't find them that palatable but others love them, taste a small amount without swallowing!

It looks like Chicken Fat Suillus.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Ok. Tastes slightly sour. Slightly grassy. With an aroma reminiscent of tanned leather.

Sounds about right, I don't find them to be that great for eating!

They are boletes, visible by the lack of gills and the wide, large stems. They should look somewhat like a hamburger on a stem...?
They should be yum. Look up some recipes, maybe....?

These specimens are a Suillus species,(sticky bun bolete)
I think you remove the sticky cap surface but I'm not sure, I don't really eat them, just taste them through curiosity!

On all but the younger specimen of the boletes I hunt I remove the pores (they'll come off easily) before preparing them. That's because they'll get really mushy (some even slimy) when cooked or fried. Also small bugs love to crawl up the pores. The specimen you have seems to be pretty matured, so removing the pores will enhance your eating experience.
