would it be at all possible to run an extension cord up to there? if not, i'm sure someone can think of a heating system that uses batteries or something...

Well you could do it with solar power, or you could build a fire, or you could run an extesion cord. So pretty much, there's no way short of re-wiring your house or running an extension cord up there. Besides, you should check on your stuff at least once a week, just to make sure the conditions are good and there is no contamination. Don't you think that will be a little suspect, going up into the attic like every three days?

Not to sound like a jackass, but if you can't get electricity up to your attic, you may want to think about growing in the warm weather months only. Let's say you were to use a gas type heater, or an electric rigged up to a battery like you were talking about, what if something goes wrong while you're not around, and you end up buring down the place where you live? I bet you'd feel pretty bad about that. I have tried many times in my younger days to secretly grow things at the parents house, and like you, I couldn't run electricity to where I was growing. It was a disaster. If you're going to grow, do it when you can do it the way it's supposed to be done. However, this is just my opinion.

Here is a link to Propane, the only thing that I would say about Propane is this. !) is cost a small propane heater is about $50.00 and the next thing is the cost of the propane itself. http://www.mrheater.com/flash/index.html I would buy a portable electric heater and mod it so that it can run off of a Battery.. That's my advice I wish you the best.

You could make an incubator, and keep it in your closet, or hidden somewhere. Heres two good ones.
http://www.myco-tek.com/TEKs/Incubation.htm or http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm
Then use your basement as a fruiting chamber. Or you cold just ask your parents if they would care if you grew. You could start growing edibles and slip in a batch or two of cubensis.
