55 Poppy seedlings stopped growing.
    #9930934 - 03/07/09 09:34 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I Tried outdoor and frost wilted them and they stopped growing. Duh. I tried Peat Pellets indoor and they got about 1 inch and wilted and stopped growing Maybe too hot? It was like 75f average. Now I have moved them in my garage. 65-70f average. I was able to start new seedlings after I moved the 1-2 inch ones. The new ones sprouted and caught up to the old ones(still 1-2 inches) now they are all stopped at 1-2 inches. And have been for 3 weeks. They are nice and green, they stand straight up. Most of them Have their first set of true leaves. They are 2 feet under 2 40w floros. None of them will get any bigger. Picture wont help much, but to give you an idea. Is this common? Am I missing something? I have 55 Seedlings, and every single one is doing it. They look healthy but wont get bigger! Should 4-5 week old seedlings be 2 inches tall? Should they even bee seedlings anymore?

I normally have problems with Peat Pellets and root rot/damp off so maybe that was your problem?

I don't know, good luck!

maybe the light is too far away so not enough intense light for fast growth could be the culprit.

poppies start out as cabbage like plants, right?

I would grow 'em in ground, planting in fall or very early spring.

They germ best around 55F, and I would imagine this is best for initial growth, maybe your light intensity, spectrum or cycle could be an influence.

24/7 light. Can I transplant outdoors now or will that hurt them?

Poppies do not transplant well.

24/7 light is the problem, poppies are long day (short night) plants. If you want them to veg. you need a 12/12 light cycle like they'd get in the spring. Giving them that much light from seed 'confuses' them, they think it's the middle of summer and are trying to flower - I had the same problem with growing poppies indoors, they need a solid 12 hours of darkness or they will just stall like that totally skipping the veg. phase and eventually put out pin head sized pods. I doubt you can salvage them now, even if you change the light cycle the damage has probably been done.

how cold is it now where you live? Try planting just 1,or two outside and see if they survive they might not necessarily grow a lot, but  if they do survive  just plant 'em outside cause it'll be warming up soon and then they'll be back on schedule.

If you have extra seeds, it might even be better to start with fresh seeds outdoors, the roots of Poppies don't take well to transplants.  I don't know how they respond to photoperiods, but I would bet they do.

Frost will not kill poppies. Maybe if it was a sudden frost after a warm spell it might kill a few or slow them down. Overwatering is a likely suspect. That or over ferting.

For the next week it will be a high of low 60s. No more frost i think. I have my current plants in jiffy peat pots. So I can transplant them directly in those. i have a large plot ready to go. I'm just worried about rain. Cause it pours hard here and that will murder those little ones.
